B-LINE HFD3175 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the HFD interrupting rating high enough for a 480V service with high available fault current?
The HFD3175 carries 100 kAIC at 240 Vac and 65 kAIC at 480 Vac. The H in the HFD designation is the high interrupting version of the F-frame, so if your short circuit study calls for 65 kA at 480 volts this breaker meets it without needing series ratings or current limiting fuses.
2) Is the HFD3175 a complete breaker or just a trip unit that needs a frame?
It ships as a complete breaker. The HFD3175 is a full F-frame molded case unit with the trip mechanism built in, so nothing separate has to be ordered to make it functional. Terminals are supplied on the load side.
3) Does the HFD3175 have adjustable trip settings?
No. This breaker uses a fixed thermal, fixed magnetic trip unit, so both the overload and the instantaneous pickup are factory set and cannot be dialed in. If your coordination study requires an adjustable instantaneous or an electronic trip, this is the wrong unit for that opening in the panel.
4) Will an Eaton HFD3175 fit the space I have in an existing panel or enclosure?
The breaker measures 4.13 inches high, 4.13 inches wide and 3.38 inches in length, and weighs 4.4 pounds. That is the standard Eaton Series C F-frame envelope, so it drops into an F-frame mounting position in a panelboard, switchboard or enclosure prepped for that frame.
5) Can an HFD3175 replace a standard FD breaker of the same amperage?
HFD and FD share the Eaton Series C F-frame, and the HFD3175 is a three-pole 175 amp unit. The difference is interrupting capacity: HFD is the high-interrupting version at 100 kAIC at 240 Vac and 65 kAIC at 480 Vac. Going up to HFD from a lower-rated F-frame breaker of the same poles and amperage is the usual move when a fault current study comes back higher than the installed breaker's AIC.
6) Can this breaker be used on a 250 volt DC system?
Yes, the HFD3175 is rated 250 Vdc in addition to 600 Vac, so it can be applied on DC distribution up to 250 volts as well as AC at 50 or 60 Hz. Pole configuration on DC applications should follow Eaton's application data for the F-frame.
