Emtek 1153-FB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Emtek 1153 multi point trim include the multi point mortise lock body?
No. The Emtek 1153 is trim only: plates and handles. The multi point mortise lock box has to be sourced separately, normally matched to the door manufacturer's existing gear. Order the lock body first, confirm it is a Configuration #1 layout, then the 1153 trim dresses it.
2) What is "Door Configuration #1" on Emtek multi point trim, and how do I know my patio door uses it?
Configuration refers to the hole pattern in the door: where the cylinder sits relative to the handle and the spacing between them. The 1153 is Configuration #1, with the cylinder position below the handle and a 3-5/8 inch center-to-center between the handle spindle and the cylinder hole. Measure the existing prep on your door; if the cylinder is below the lever at 3-5/8 inch centers, this is the right configuration. A different spacing or a cylinder above the handle needs a different config trim.
3) Which swinging patio door brands does the Emtek 1153 trim reference?
Emtek lists this multi point trim against Atrium, G-U, KML by Andersen, Andersen, Marvin Integrity, Paddock Lockmaster and Superior doors. Those are the reference manufacturers whose multi point preps the Configuration #1 pattern addresses. Confirm your door's cylinder-below-handle layout at 3-5/8 inch centers before ordering.
4) Is there a key cylinder on the 1153, or just a thumbturn?
Non-keyed. The 1153 uses an American style thumbturn on the inside to throw and retract the multi point lock, with no key cylinder supplied. The cylinder classification is American and the cylinder position is below the handle, so if you want key access from outside you need the keyed version of the same trim rather than this one.
5) What do I have to specify when ordering the Emtek 1153 trim?
Four things. Finish, from Flat Black Bronze (FB), Medium Bronze (MB) or Tumbled White Bronze (TWB). Lever style, choosing among Aurora, Bryce, Cimarron, Cody, Durango, Lariat, Mariposa, Montrose, Teton and Yuma. Handing, right or left. And door thickness, which is an optional text entry for doors outside the standard. Lever and handing are both required selections, so the order cannot be placed without them.
6) Why does handing matter on a multi point patio door trim?
The lever and thumbturn have to land on the correct face and orientation for the swing of the door, so the 1153 is built right hand or left hand and the two are not interchangeable. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your right it is right hand. Getting it wrong puts the thumbturn upside down on the interior plate.
7) How big are the plates on the Emtek 1153, and will they cover my old trim?
The plates measure 1-1/2 x 11 inches in a rectangular style. That is a narrow, tall escutcheon suited to patio door stiles, but it will only conceal a previous plate that was equal or smaller in footprint. If the old trim was a wider or longer plate, expect witness marks or unfilled screw holes around the new one.
8) Will the Emtek 1153 handle sag over time like my old patio door lever?
Spring Assist is built into the trim. It returns the lever to the neutral horizontal position after each use, which is what prevents the drooping handle common on older multi point trims. No separate spring cartridge to order.
9) Can I mix and match Emtek Sandcast Bronze levers with the 1153 trim plates?
Yes, any Sandcast Bronze lever in the Emtek range can be ordered on the 1153 plates. The swatch list runs Aurora, Bryce, Cimarron, Cody, Durango, Lariat, Mariposa, Montrose, Teton and Yuma, so the patio door can be matched to the lever pattern used on the interior doors of the same collection.
10) Is the Emtek 1153 solid bronze, and is it meant for commercial openings?
The plates and handles are sandcast bronze, a solid bronze substrate rather than plated zinc, and the three finishes are living finishes that develop character with handling. It is classified residential, so for a high traffic commercial entrance a Grade 1 commercial lockset is the better specification.
11) Is the Emtek 1153 multi point trim electronic or keypad operated?
Purely mechanical. There is no electronic or keypad component, no wiring, and no battery. Operation is the lever plus an inside thumbturn that drives the multi point lock body.
