Emtek 1453-FB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Emtek 1453 multi point trim include the mortise lock body?
No. The 1453 is trim only, and the set includes the interior and exterior plates plus the handles. The multi point mortise lock box has to be sourced separately, so you need to know which multi point lock is already in the door (or which one you are buying) before this trim will do you any good.
2) What is Door Configuration #4 on an Emtek multi point trim, and how do I know my door needs it?
Configuration #4 describes where the cylinder and thumbturn sit relative to the handle on the plate. On the 1453 the cylinder position is above the handle, it takes an American style cylinder, and the inside is non-keyed with a thumbturn. Match that layout against the holes already bored in your patio door slab. If your door has the cylinder below the handle, or needs a keyed interior, a different configuration number is the one to order.
3) Will this Emtek trim fit my Marvin or JELD-WEN swinging patio door?
Emtek lists the 1453 trim against multi point hardware from Ashland, G-U, Caradco, JELD-WEN, Jeldwen Custom Collection (formerly Pozzi), Marvin, PGT, Premium Collection (formerly Norco) and Weathershield. Those are the door and lock makers the configurations were built around. The deciding factor is still the configuration and the 3-5/8 inch center-to-center between the handle and the cylinder on your existing prep.
4) What is the center-to-center spacing on the Emtek 1453 plate?
3-5/8 inches between the handle and the cylinder opening, with the cylinder sitting above the handle. Measure that dimension on the door you are retrofitting; if your existing prep is a different spacing, this plate will not line up over the holes.
5) What do I have to specify when ordering the Emtek 1453 trim?
Four things. Finish, from Flat Black Bronze (FB), Medium Bronze (MB) or Tumbled White Bronze (TWB). Lever style, from Aurora, Bryce, Cimarron, Cody, Durango, Lariat, Mariposa, Montrose, Teton or Yuma. Handing, right hand or left hand. And your door thickness, which is an optional entry but worth giving so the spindle and cylinder length suit the slab.
6) Is handing important on a multi point lock trim, or is it reversible?
Handing matters. Right hand and left hand are separate orders on the 1453, so determine the swing at the door before you buy. Get it wrong and the lever and thumbturn orientation will be backwards on the finished opening.
7) How big are the plates, and will they cover my old escutcheon?
The rectangular plates measure 1-1/2 by 11 inches. That is a narrow plate, so if you are replacing something wider or a larger decorative backplate, expect the old outline or finish shadow to show on the door face. Check the footprint against what is coming off before you commit.
8) Can I key the inside of this Emtek trim, or is it thumbturn only?
Thumbturn only inside. The 1453 is non-keyed on the interior, so you retract the multi point bolts by hand from inside and by key from outside with an American style cylinder. If your local code or insurance calls for a double keyed patio door, this is not the trim for that opening.
9) Does a cylinder come with the Emtek 1453 trim?
The set covers the plates and handles. The cylinder is sized to the door and the lock body, and the trim is prepped for an American style cylinder mounted above the handle. Plan on specifying that cylinder alongside the multi point mortise lock box, which also is not part of the trim package.
10) Can I match this patio door trim to Emtek bronze levers on my other doors?
Yes. The 1453 can be ordered with any Emtek Sandcast Bronze lever, and the finishes offered here are Flat Black Bronze, Medium Bronze and Tumbled White Bronze. Pick the same lever style and finish you used on the interior doors and the patio door reads as part of the same set.
11) Will the levers on this Emtek bronze trim sag over time?
Emtek builds a spring assist into the multi point trim that returns the lever to the neutral horizontal position, which is what stops the droopy-handle look on a heavy patio door lever. It is included, not an upcharge option.
12) Is this Emtek sandcast bronze trim suitable for a commercial entrance?
It is a residential product. The 1453 belongs to Emtek's Sandcast Bronze collection for swinging patio doors, cast in bronze with a rustic aesthetic. For a commercial opening with cycle and grade requirements, look at commercial mortise or multi point hardware instead.
