1) Does the Emtek 1653 multi point trim include the multi point mortise lock body?
No. The 1653 is trim only, so the set covers the plates and handles and you supply the multi point mortise lock box separately. If you are replacing worn or damaged handles on a swinging patio door that already has a working multi point lock in the slab, that is exactly what this is for. If the lock body itself has failed, the trim will not fix it.
2) What is Door Configuration #6 on the Emtek 1653, and how do I know my patio door matches it?
Configuration #6 describes where the cylinder sits relative to the handle and how the plate is prepped. On the 1653 the cylinder position is below the handle, the cylinder classification is American, and the center-to-center spacing between the handle and the cylinder hole is 3-5/8 inches. Measure from the center of your existing handle spindle to the center of the cylinder hole in the door; if it is 3-5/8 inches with the cylinder underneath, this trim lines up with your existing prep.
3) Will Emtek 1653 trim fit a Milgard or Pella swinging patio door?
Milgard and Pella are the reference door manufacturers for this trim, so their multi point patio doors are the intended targets. The deciding check is still the prep: 3-5/8 inch center-to-center between handle and cylinder, cylinder below the handle, American cylinder. Match that and the plate lands on the existing holes.
4) What do I have to specify when ordering Emtek 1653 patio door trim?
Three things get chosen at order time. Lever style is required, with ten Sandcast Bronze options: Aurora, Bryce, Cimarron, Cody, Durango, Lariat, Mariposa, Montrose, Teton and Yuma. Handing is required, right hand or left hand. Door thickness is an open text entry, so give the actual measured thickness of your patio door slab. Finish is picked separately from three bronze options.
5) Is the Emtek 1653 keyed, and how does the inside of the door operate?
Non-keyed. The 1653 uses an American style thumbturn on the interior rather than an inside key cylinder, so from inside you throw and retract the multi point lock by hand. The exterior plate is prepped for a cylinder below the handle, but no cylinder or key hardware comes as part of this trim.
6) How do I determine handing for an Emtek multi point patio door handle set?
Handing is required on the 1653 and is not field reversible, so it has to be right on the order. Stand outside the door, on the side the exterior plate and cylinder face. If the hinges are on your right, it is right hand; hinges on your left, left hand. Get it wrong and the lever swings the wrong way against the thumbturn side.
7) What finishes does the Emtek 1653 Sandcast Bronze trim come in, and will it match my other bronze door hardware?
Three: Flat Black Bronze (FB), Medium Bronze (MB) and Tumbled White Bronze (TWB). All three are Emtek's Sandcast Bronze collection finishes, so if the rest of the openings in the house use Emtek Sandcast Bronze levers and knobs in one of those codes, the patio trim matches the set. Sandcast bronze is a living finish and varies piece to piece by nature of the casting.
8) How big is the Emtek 1653 plate, and will it cover the holes left by my old patio handle?
The plates measure 1-1/2 by 11 inches in a rectangular shape. That is a narrow, tall escutcheon sized for a patio door stile, so it will hide fastener holes that fall within that footprint but not a wider prior plate. If your old trim left marks or holes outside a 1-1/2 inch width, they will show.
9) Do Emtek multi point handles sag over time?
Each 1653 trim set ships with a spring assist that returns the lever to neutral, which is what stops the drooping handle problem common on heavy patio levers. It is built into the trim, not an add-on you order.
