Emtek 1242-MB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Emtek 1242 multi point trim include the multi point mortise lock body?
No. The Emtek 1242 is trim only: the two plates and the handles. The multi point mortise lock box has to be ordered separately, so if you are replacing worn handles on a swinging patio door that already has a working multi point lock, this is the right part. If the gearbox itself has failed, the trim alone will not fix it.
2) What does Door Configuration #2 mean on an Emtek multi point trim, and will it match my patio door?
Configuration #2 describes the hole pattern in the door: on the 1242 the cylinder sits above the handle, with 3-5/8 inch center-to-center between the cylinder hole and the handle hub. Emtek references this configuration against BiltBest, G-U, Hurd (Energy Saver) and Andersen doors. Measure your existing door from the cylinder hole center to the handle center; if it is 3-5/8 inches with the cylinder up top, the plate pattern lines up.
3) This trim is non-keyed passage. Will it still lock my patio door?
The 1242 is a non-keyed passage trim, so there is no cylinder and no key function in the handle set. The lever simply retracts the latch and throws the multi point rods through the mortise gearbox. If you need a keyed exterior patio door, this is the wrong function for you and you want a keyed version of the Tuscany multi point trim instead.
4) What door thickness and backset does the Emtek 1242 trim work with?
It fits doors from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick, with an adjustable backset of 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches and a 2-1/8 inch cross bore. Those are the standard residential patio door dimensions, so most swinging patio slabs take it without new boring. Thickness is a text field on the order, so give the actual measured slab thickness when you order.
5) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the Emtek 1242 patio door trim?
Yes, handing is required: right hand (RH) or left hand (LH). Stand outside the door looking at it; the side the hinges are on tells you the hand. Get it wrong on a multi point trim and the lever pitch and plate orientation will be backwards on the slab.
6) Which levers can I put on the Emtek 1242 Tuscany bronze plates?
Four lever styles are offered with the 1242 plates: Medici, Napoli, Octagon and Padua. All are lost wax cast bronze from the Tuscany collection, so any Tuscany bronze lever matches the plate casting and finish. Lever choice is required at order.
7) What finishes does the Emtek 1242 Tuscany multi point trim come in?
Two bronze finishes: Flat Black Bronze (FB) and Medium Bronze (MB). Both are on lost wax cast bronze plates, so the finish is on solid bronze rather than plated over another substrate, and it will patina rather than flake. If you are matching other Tuscany bronze hardware already on the house, pick the same suffix.
8) My old patio door levers sag. Does this Emtek trim fix that?
Yes. Every current Emtek multi point lock trim, including the 1242, includes a spring assist that returns the lever to neutral and stops the handle drooping. That is the usual reason property managers replace older multi point trim on patio sliders and French doors.
9) Is the Emtek 1242 trim suitable for a commercial opening?
No, it is a residential product. The 1242 is swinging patio door hardware for homes. For a commercial or institutional entrance where a graded, code-rated device is specified, use commercial mortise or exit hardware instead of multi point patio trim.
10) How big are the Emtek 1242 escutcheon plates?
The Tuscany style plates measure 2 x 10-1/2 inches. Check that against the existing plate footprint on your door, since any old screw holes or finish shadow outside that area will show once the new plate is on.
11) What cylinder does the keyed version of this Emtek configuration take?
On this Emtek multi point trim the cylinder classification is American and the cylinder position is above the handle. The 1242 itself is non-keyed, so there is no cylinder in this set, but the plate pattern is built around an American cylinder sitting above the lever, which matters if you later swap to a keyed trim of the same configuration.
