Emtek 1442-MB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Emtek 1442 multi point trim include the multi point lock itself?
No. The Emtek 1442 is trim only: plates and handles for a swinging patio door. The multi point mortise lock box is a separate purchase, so you need the gearbox and rods that suit your door already in place or ordered alongside. You also pick a lever style with it (Medici, Napoli, Octagon, or Padua).
2) Will the Emtek 1442 Tuscany trim fit my patio door's existing multi point lock prep?
It is built to Emtek Door Configuration #4, with a 3-5/8 inch center-to-center between the handle and the cylinder hole, a 2-1/8 inch cross bore, and an adjustable 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset. Emtek references this hardware against doors from Ashland, G-U, Caradco, JELD-WEN, JELD-WEN Custom Collection (formerly Pozzi), Marvin, PGT, Premium Collection (formerly Norco), and Weathershield. Match your door's configuration number and CTC before ordering, since the other Emtek configurations use different spacing.
3) Is the Emtek 1442 keyed, and can I lock the patio door with it?
No key. The 1442 is a non-keyed passage trim, so the levers simply retract the latch and there is no cylinder in the handle set. If you need to key the opening, you want a keyed version of the Tuscany multi point trim instead. On the keyed configurations the cylinder sits above the handle and takes an American cylinder.
4) Do I have to specify handing on the Emtek 1442 patio door trim?
Yes, handing is required. You order it right hand or left hand, so determine the swing and hinge side of the patio door first. A handed multi point trim cannot be flipped in the field.
5) What size are the plates on the Emtek Tuscany 1442, and what finishes can I get?
The Tuscany style plates measure 2 x 10-1/2 inches and are lost wax cast bronze. Two finishes: Flat Black Bronze (FB) and Medium Bronze (MB). Both are living finishes in the Tuscany Bronze collection, so they will pair with other Tuscany Bronze levers and trim elsewhere in the house.
6) Can I use a different Emtek lever with the 1442 trim?
Any Tuscany lost wax cast bronze lever can be ordered on it. The four stocked choices are the Medici, Napoli, Octagon, and Padua. Lever style is a required selection, so pick it at the time of order rather than swapping later.
7) Do Emtek multi point patio levers sag over time?
The 1442 trim includes a spring assist that returns the lever to horizontal, which is what stops the droop you see on older multi point handle sets. Worth knowing if you are replacing sagging handles on a swinging patio door rather than doing new construction.
8) Is the Emtek 1442 trim suitable for a commercial entrance?
It is a residential product, cast bronze trim for swinging patio doors. For a commercial opening with traffic and code requirements you want a Grade 1 commercial lockset rather than this multi point patio trim.
9) What latch faceplate shape comes with the Emtek 1442?
The latch faceplate is available round corner or square corner, so it can match the existing mortise in the door edge without any filing or patching.
