Emtek 1285-US15 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Emtek 1285 multi point trim include the lock body, or do I need to order the mortise lock separately?
Trim only. The 1285 set includes the plates and handles, and the multi point mortise lock box is not included. If the existing multi point lock in the door is sound, this replaces the visible hardware on it; if you are building a new door, you need the multi point mortise lock separately.
2) What does the Dummy function mean on the Emtek 1285 Concord trim - will it operate the multi point lock?
Dummy means it does not operate anything. The 1285 Concord dummy pair is fixed trim, no latch retraction, no key: it goes on the inactive leaf of a pair of patio doors or on a door where the multi point lock is driven by the other side. If you need the handle to throw the rods and hooks, you want an active (operating) multi point trim instead, not the dummy.
3) Will Emtek 1285 trim fit my patio door - what door thickness does it cover?
1-3/8 inch through 1-3/4 inch doors, which covers most swinging patio and French door leaves. The plates are surface mount, so no new door prep is needed for the trim itself. Door thickness is entered when you order so the spindles and screws come the right length.
4) What is Door Configuration #2 on Emtek multi point trim and how do I know my door is that config?
Config #2 puts the cylinder above the handle with a 3-5/8 inch center to center between the cylinder hole and the handle spindle. That spacing and the cylinder-over-handle arrangement is what has to match your existing multi point lock. Measure from the middle of the key cylinder hole to the middle of the handle hub on the door: if it is 3-5/8 inches with the cylinder up top, this is your configuration. This dummy pair itself is not keyed, but the plate is cut to that same Config #2 pattern.
5) Why does a dummy handle set need handing specified?
Handing sets which way the lever points and which side the plate reads correctly on, so right hand and left hand are both offered and one has to be chosen at order. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your right, it is right hand. On a pair of patio doors the dummy leaf and the operating leaf are usually opposite hands, so check the leaf this trim is actually going on, not the one you walk through.
6) Do the levers come with the Emtek 1285 trim or are they ordered separately?
Lever style is a required choice on the 1285, and the set ships with plates and handles together. Any Emtek brass lever can be paired with it, from the L-Square, T-Bar and R-Bar bar levers in Faceted, Hammered, Knurled, Tribeca, Straight Knurled and White Marble, through to the cast styles like Coventry, Milano, Rope, Rustic, Santa Fe and Arts and Crafts. Pick the same lever your entry and interior doors use and the patio opening matches the rest of the house.
7) What size are the Concord plates on the Emtek 1285, and will they cover the marks left by my old patio door handle?
The Concord plates measure 2 x 10-1/2 inches. That is a narrow, tall backplate, so it hides a vertical run of old fastener holes but only about 2 inches of width. If your existing trim was a wider escutcheon, measure the outline it leaves before assuming the Concord plate covers it.
8) What finishes does the Emtek 1285 Concord dummy trim come in, and can I match it to the rest of my door hardware?
Eight finishes: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Satin Nickel (US15), Pewter (US15A), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL) and French Antique (US7). These are the standard Emtek brass-collection codes, so the same US number on your entry sets and interior levers matches. Unlacquered brass is the exception to expect movement on: it has no coating and will patina with handling and weather.
9) Is the Emtek 1285 solid brass, and is it rated for commercial use?
Solid brass plates and handles, and the product is a residential-duty item. For an apartment or condo patio door it is the right class of hardware; for a high-traffic commercial entrance carrying an ANSI grade requirement, specify a commercial-grade set instead.
10) If I later want a keyed handle on this patio door, does the Emtek 1285 Concord take a standard cylinder?
The 1285 dummy pair is not keyed and has no cylinder in it. The Config #2 plate pattern it shares is built around an American-standard cylinder sitting above the handle, so the keyed version of the same Concord trim takes an American cylinder in that position. Order the keyed trim for the active leaf and keep the dummy on the fixed leaf.
