Emtek 1844-MB – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Emtek 1844 multi point trim include the multi point lock mechanism?
No. The Emtek 1844 is trim only: plates and handles. The multi point mortise lock box has to be sourced separately, and the trim mounts over it. Budget for the lock body plus the trim when you price the opening.
2) What does the non-keyed fixed handle outside / operating handle inside function on the Emtek 1844 actually do on a patio door?
It is the semi-active (inactive) leaf trim of a French or patio door pair. Outside you get a fixed, non-operating handle, essentially a pull. Inside the lever operates the multi point lock to throw and retract the points. There is no cylinder, so you cannot key it from outside; the keyed leaf is the active door.
3) What is Door Configuration #8 on Emtek multi point trim and how do I know it's the one I need?
Emtek codes each trim by the arrangement of the plate, handle and cylinder cutouts. The 1844 is Configuration #8: no keyway, fixed handle outside, operating lever inside, on a 2 by 10-1/2 inch plate with a 5-1/4 inch center-to-center between the handle and the upper hole location. Match that against the prep already routed in your door or on the door manufacturer's hardware chart before ordering.
4) Will the Emtek 1844 trim cover the existing prep on my door?
The escutcheon plates measure 2 by 10-1/2 inches with a 5-1/4 inch center-to-center spacing. If your existing prep is wider than 2 inches or the hole spacing does not match 5-1/4 inches, the plate will not cover it and you will be patching the door face. Measure the spacing between the existing handle bore and the upper hole first.
5) Do I have to specify handing for the Emtek 1844?
Yes, handing is required. You pick Right Hand (RH) or Left Hand (LH) at order time. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on the right it is right hand. Getting this wrong on a semi-active leaf means the fixed outside handle and the inside lever land on the wrong sides.
6) What do I have to pick besides the finish when ordering the Emtek 1844?
Three things. Lever style, from Medici (MD), Napoli (NA), Octagon (OCL) or Padua (PD). Handing, right or left. And door thickness, which is a free-text entry so the spindle and screw pack come sized to your door. Finish is Flat Black Bronze (FB) or Medium Bronze (MB).
7) Can I mix a different Emtek lever with the 1844 Tuscany bronze plates?
Any Emtek Lost Wax Cast Bronze lever from the Tuscany Bronze collection can be ordered on these plates, so you are not locked to the four default swatches if your other doors in the house use another Tuscany bronze lever. The plate itself is lost wax cast bronze, so keep the lever in the same material family for a finish match.
8) Will this Emtek trim fix handles that sag on a tall patio door?
Emtek multi point trim now ships with a spring assist that returns the lever to neutral, which is what stops the drooping handle you get on older multi point trim after a few seasons of use. That is built into the trim set, not something you add.
9) Is the Emtek 1844 suitable for a commercial entrance or apartment building door?
It is a residential product, meant for swinging patio and French doors in homes. For a commercial entry with traffic and code requirements, this is the wrong trim. Two bronze finishes are offered, Flat Black Bronze and Medium Bronze.
10) Does the Emtek 1844 take a cylinder, and where does the cylinder go on the keyed version?
The 1844 itself takes no cylinder, it is the non-keyed semi-active half. On the keyed Emtek multi point trims in this family the cylinder sits above the handle and takes an American standard cylinder. That is what you order for the active leaf of the pair, so the two doors can be keyed alike with the rest of the house.
11) Which door manufacturer's multi point hardware does the Emtek 1844 reference?
Emtek lists Neuma Doors as the reference door manufacturer for this trim configuration. If you are trimming out a Neuma swinging patio door, this is the configuration to check against your door's prep sheet.
12) Is the Emtek 1844 an electronic or smart lock trim?
No, it is purely mechanical trim. No electronics, no motor, no keypad. The inside lever mechanically drives the multi point lock box you supply separately.
