Emtek 1L1M23-US19 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Emtek 1L1M23 multi point entry set include the multi point lock body?
No. The 1L1M23 is trim only, plates and handles. The multi point mortise lock box has to be ordered separately, and so does the door prep to match it. Buyers replacing worn or dated hardware on a swinging patio door usually already have the lock body in the door and only need the trim.
2) Will the Emtek Melrose 1L1M23 trim line up with my existing multi point lock?
The Melrose trim is built to a 3-5/8 inch center-to-center spacing between the cylinder and the handle hub, with the cylinder above the handle, and it is dimensioned for a large multi point configuration. Emtek references G-U door manufacturer hardware for this trim. Measure your door from the handle spindle to the cylinder hole; if that comes out at 3-5/8 inches with the cylinder on top, the plate lands on the existing prep.
3) Is the 1L1M23 keyed, and what is on the inside of the door?
Non-keyed. The 1L1M23 has an American style thumbturn on the interior instead of a keyed cylinder, so the cylinder above the handle on the exterior is what you key, and it takes an American style cylinder. If you need key access from both sides, this is the wrong configuration and you want the keyed inside version of the Melrose trim instead.
4) What do I have to specify when ordering the Emtek 1L1M23 trim set?
Three things beyond finish. Handing, right or left, is required and cannot be reversed after the fact. Lever style is required, chosen from 51 Emtek brass lever designs including L-Square, T-Bar and R-Bar in Faceted, Hammered, Knurled, Tribeca, Straight Knurled and White Marble, plus named levers such as Athena, Geneva, Milano and Santa Fe. Door thickness is an optional entry, so give it if your door is anything other than standard. Finish is one of nine.
5) Which handing do I order for a swinging patio door?
Handing is required on the 1L1M23 and is set at the factory, so get it right first. Stand outside the door on the exterior: if the hinges are on your right, it is right hand. Emtek offers this trim in Right Hand (RH) and Left Hand (LH) only, so there is no reversible option to fall back on.
6) How big is the Melrose multi point plate, and will it cover the marks left by my old hardware?
The Melrose plate measures 2.9 x 17.5 inches. That is a long, narrow escutcheon running most of the lock stile, so it hides the scars from most full-length multi point trims it replaces, but it will not cover a wider plate. Compare against what is on the door before you pull it off.
7) What finishes does the Emtek Melrose multi point trim come in?
Nine, all on solid brass: Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL), French Antique (US7), Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Nickel Lifetime (US14), Satin Nickel (US15), Pewter (US15A), Flat Black (US19) and Polished Chrome (US26). Unlacquered brass is the one that will patina, so if you are matching a fleet of doors and want them to stay identical, pick a lifetime finish instead.
8) Do Emtek multi point levers sag over time?
Each Melrose multi point trim now ships with Emtek's Spring Assist function, which returns the lever to neutral and stops the droop that shows up on heavy patio door levers after a few years of use. It is built into the trim, not a separate part to order.
9) Can I use the Emtek 1L1M23 entry set on a commercial building's doors?
Emtek lists the Melrose multi point trim as residential. It is swinging patio door hardware for houses and residential units, not a Grade rated commercial entry set. For a storefront, an office suite or anything on an egress path with cycle and fire requirements, specify commercial mortise or exit hardware instead.
10) Is the Emtek 1L1M23 a smart lock or does it take a keypad?
Purely mechanical. The 1L1M23 has no electronic component, no keypad and no wiring, so operation is the thumbturn inside and the cylinder above the handle outside. Nothing needs power and nothing fails when the battery does.
11) Can I match Emtek Melrose trim to the lever style used elsewhere in the house?
Yes, and that is the point of the 51 lever options. The Melrose plate is a contemporary style, but the lever is ordered separately from the brass lever range, so you can carry a Tribeca or Knurled lever from the interior doors straight through to the patio door, or run a traditional Rope, Ribbon and Reed or Arts and Crafts lever on the same plate. Any brass lever in the range will mount.
