Emtek 3144 Artemis Brass Mortise Entrance Lockset - Dummy

No latching, no keying. The 3144 Artemis is a dummy set, so the handle is fixed and there is no working latchbolt or cylinder in it. Use it on the inactive leaf of a pair of doors, on a closet or pantry door that only needs a pull, or wherever you want the look of the entry set with no operation. If you need the operating version of the same Artemis entryset, that is the 3544.

1-3/4 inches is the standard build, which covers a typical exterior or commercial-weight door. Thicker doors are handled, but the thickness has to be called out when the order is placed so the spindles and screw lengths come correct. There is a door thickness field on the order for exactly that.

The Artemis mortise unit comes in 2-1/2 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset and is prepped to standard mortise ANSI A115.1. If the door already has an A115.1 mortise pocket cut, measure from the door edge to the center of the knob or lever hole and order the matching backset. A door prepped at 2-3/4 will not take the 2-1/2 body without re-boring the trim holes.

UL 180 minute is the rating carried on the Emtek brass mortise entrance sets, so a 90 minute or lesser opening is within it. Confirm the door and frame label carry their own rating too, since the assembly is rated as a whole.

It is a residential-duty brass set, contemporary styling, solid brass body and trim. For an apartment corridor, a school or any Grade 1 commercial opening, go to a graded lockset instead: the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom unit for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch, also 1-3/4 inch.

Both are dummy function, non-keyed trim with no latch operation. The Emtek 3144 Artemis is a brass mortise dummy set sold complete and ordered with any Emtek knob, crystal, porcelain or lever inside trim, with handing specified left or right. The Schlage L0170 is a Grade 1, heavy duty L Series half dummy lever trim for 1-3/4 inch doors, so it is a single-side trim rather than a matched brass set. Choose the Emtek where the dummy needs to visually match other Emtek brass trim on the opening, and the L0170 where the door already carries L Series hardware.

Interior trim is chosen at order time from Emtek's full brass, crystal and porcelain program, roughly ninety knob and lever options: levers from Stuttgart, Helios, Athena, Hermes, Poseidon and Argos through Milano, Turino and Rustic; knobs including the Ace, Ace Knurled, Spoke, Orb, Round, Egg, Melon, Victoria and Providence; crystal and porcelain such as Bristol, Windsor, Georgetown, Diamond, Ebony and Ice White; and the L-Square, T-Bar, R-Bar and Conical bar knobs in faceted, hammered, knurled, Tribeca and white marble treatments. The choice is required, so the set ships complete rather than as a bare body.

Six finishes: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Satin Nickel (US15), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL) and Satin Brass (US4). All six are available in both left and right hand. Unlacquered brass is the one to think twice about on a fleet of doors, since it has no clear coat and will patina unevenly depending on how much each door gets handled.

If the decorative brass entry look is not the point, a plain dummy trim does the same job. The Schlage L0170 is a Grade 1 non-keyed half dummy mortise lever trim for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Emtek 3144 Artemis is worth it when you are matching the Artemis entryset on the active leaf and need the same escutcheon and handle profile on the inactive one.

Those apply to the operating members of the Emtek brass mortise entrance family, which is prepped for the Schlage C keyway and listed under ANSI F20 or F13. The 3144 is the dummy, so it has no cylinder and nothing to key. If you are keying the whole house alike on Schlage C, order the 3544 entryset for the doors that lock and use the 3144 where only trim is needed.

The backsets line up. Emtek's brass mortise sets are offered at 2-1/2 inch, the same backset as the Baldwin 6301 and 6310 mortise lock bodies, and both brands work off the standard mortise prep. What will not carry over is the trim: escutcheon screw patterns and spindle differ between makers, so treat it as a full trim-and-body swap rather than dropping an Emtek face onto a Baldwin body. Note also that the 3144 is the dummy, so replacing a working Baldwin 6301 entry/apartment body with it leaves that door with no latch.
