Metallics EB14SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics eye bolt stainless steel, and can it be used outdoors or in a damp location?
The EB14SS is stainless steel, which is why it gets specified for exterior runs, wet and damp locations, coastal work, and wash-down areas where a plain or zinc plated eye bolt would rust at the eye. Pair it with stainless hardware where you can, since mixing dissimilar metals at the connection is what usually starts corrosion.
2) Does the Metallics EB14SS eye bolt come with a nut?
Yes. Each EB14SS ships as an eye bolt and nut assembly, so you do not need to source a separate 3/8-16 nut to land it through a plate or channel. Threaded length still has to clear your material thickness plus the nut for a full thread engagement.
3) How many eye bolts are in a box of Metallics EB14SS?
They come 100 per box. That is a stocking quantity rather than a one-off, which suits an electrical contractor hanging a long messenger or support run, or an MRO storeroom standardizing on one 3/8-16 anchor point across a facility.
4) What is a 3/8-16 eye bolt and nut used for on an electrical job?
An eye bolt like the EB14SS gives you a closed or formed loop on a threaded shank, so you bolt it through structure or into a tapped hole and then hang something from the eye. On electrical work that is typically messenger or guy wire, aircraft cable for suspended fixtures and strut, chain, or a tie-off point for cable supports. It is a support fitting, not a rated lifting eye, so use it for the hanging and anchoring work it is catalogued for.
5) Will a 3/8-16 x 4 inch eye bolt go through a thick beam or plate?
The shank is 4 inches overall, so once you subtract the eye itself and leave room for the nut and a washer, the usable grip is less than 4 inches. For thin plate, strut, or a single wood member it is plenty. For a deep timber or a doubled-up assembly, measure your stack first and move to a longer eye bolt if 4 inches will not let the nut seat on full thread.
6) What should I order to match the Metallics EB14SS stainless eye bolt?
Stay with 3/8-16 stainless across the connection: stainless flat washers under the nut, and any turnbuckle, shackle, cable clip, or thimble sized for 3/8 inch. The EB14SS is the stainless version of the 3/8-16 x 4 eye bolt, so if the location is dry and interior, a zinc plated 3/8-16 eye bolt is the cheaper equivalent for the same hole and the same nut.
