Falcon 650008-US32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Falcon 650008 extension rod actually do on a surface vertical rod exit device?
It's the top or bottom rod section on a Falcon 19, 24, or 25 Series surface vertical rod exit device, the part that carries motion from the pushbar to the latch points at the head and the threshold. If a rod is bent, corroded, or cut wrong on a previous install, this is the piece you replace rather than the whole device. It's a genuine Falcon replacement component, so the prep and connection points match the original device.
2) Will the Falcon 650008 rod work on my Von Duprin or Precision vertical rod device?
No. The 650008 is built for Falcon 19, 24, and 25 Series exit devices only. Rod diameter, end machining, and the connector geometry differ between manufacturers, so a Falcon rod won't drop into another brand's device. Identify the device series stamped on your existing exit device before ordering a rod.
3) Is the Falcon 650008 for surface mounted rods or concealed vertical rod devices?
Surface only. The 650008 is a surface vertical rod, the kind that runs exposed on the face of the door above and below the pushbar. Concealed vertical rod devices house their rods inside the door and use a different rod assembly entirely, so if your rods are hidden in the stile this isn't the part.
4) How long is the Falcon 650008 extension rod, and will it cover a taller door?
36 inches. That length covers the common commercial door heights on 19, 24, and 25 Series surface vertical rod applications. On openings taller than standard, vertical rod devices need a longer rod section, so measure the run from the device connection to the top or bottom latch on your actual door before you order.
5) What finishes does the Falcon 650008 vertical rod come in?
Five: US3 bright brass, US10 satin bronze, US19 matte black, US32D satin stainless steel, and SP313 dark bronze anodized. Because the rod runs exposed on the face of the door, the finish is visible, so match it to the exit device and the trim already on the opening. US32D is the usual choice on commercial openings where the rest of the hardware is satin stainless.
6) Do I need one Falcon 650008 or two to repair a vertical rod exit device?
Depends on which rod failed. A surface vertical rod device latches at both the head and the threshold, so it runs a top rod and a bottom rod. Replace only the damaged section, or order two if you're refreshing both on the same door. On a pair of doors with a device on each leaf, count per leaf.
7) Can I standardize on one rod part number across a building full of Falcon exit devices?
Across openings running Falcon 19, 24, or 25 Series surface vertical rod devices at standard door height, yes, the 650008 in 36 inches is the same part on all of them. That's the value for a facility carrying spares: one rod, one finish, stocked on the shelf. Concealed rod devices and other Falcon series won't take it.
8) Is the Falcon 650008 rated for a high traffic commercial opening or is it a light duty part?
Commercial. Falcon lists the 650008 as commercial door hardware, built for the 19, 24, and 25 Series devices that go on office buildings, schools, healthcare facilities, retail, warehouses, and government buildings. It is not a residential-grade part.
9) Do I have to pull the exit device off the door to replace a surface vertical rod?
Surface rods are reachable from the face of the door, which is the practical advantage over a concealed rod device where the rod lives inside the stile and the door has to come apart. Follow the installation instructions for the 19, 24, or 25 Series device the rod is going onto, since the rod connects to that device's specific top latch and bottom strike arrangement.
