Fernco 44U-405 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Fernco 44U-405 fit a cast iron hub, or does it go on the spigot end?
Hub end only. The 44U-405 is sized for 4 inch service weight cast iron HUB, which is the belled socket end of the pipe, not the plain spigot. Service weight cast iron hubs run a larger outside diameter than the spigot, so putting this on a spigot end leaves the coupling oversized and the seal will not pull up. If the cut you are working with is a plain spigot or a no-hub pipe, you need a coupling sized for that outside diameter instead.
2) Does the 44U-405 work with Schedule 40 PVC, or do I need a different coupling for ABS or DWV pipe?
The plastic side of the 44U-405 is specified for 4 inch Schedule 40 PVC. Nominal 4 inch Schedule 40 PVC and 4 inch ABS DWV share the same outside diameter, so the coupling seats on either one. What matters is the OD, not the resin. Anything outside that 4 inch Schedule 40 dimension, such as SDR sewer pipe or 4 inch copper DWV, is a different outside diameter and calls for a coupling sized to it.
3) What model do I order to join 4 inch cast iron hub to 4 inch PVC from Fernco?
Ask for Fernco 44U-405. That is both the model and the manufacturer part number, so it is the same designation on a counter ticket or a purchase order. There is a single configuration, no size or material options to specify, so the part number alone fully describes it.
4) Is a compression coupling like the Fernco 44U-405 allowed on a buried or concealed DWV joint?
That is a local code call, and it turns on whether the joint is accessible. Flexible compression couplings of this type are routinely used above ground on accessible DWV repairs and in open trench work, but some jurisdictions restrict them where the joint will be buried or closed into a wall. The 44U-405 itself is a mechanical joint, not a solvent weld or caulked joint, so if your inspector requires a rigid joint at that location this is not the fitting. Check the local amendment before you close the wall.
5) Do I need a torque wrench or special tool to install the Fernco 44U-405?
No special tool beyond a driver for the clamps. A compression coupling is made up by seating both pipe ends and tightening the band clamps; the usual practice is a nut driver or a torque wrench set to the clamp torque marked on the coupling. There is no heat, no lead and oakum, and no solvent cement involved in the cast iron to PVC transition.
