GMS Lock-Cylinders M100-SC-26D-AT-A2 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the GMS M100 mortise cylinder work in an Adams Rite aluminum storefront lock?
Yes. The M100 ships with the Adams Rite and Yale standard cam, which is the cam Adams Rite storefront deadlatches and deadlocks take, so it drops into that prep without a cam swap. It is a 1 inch conventional mortise cylinder, which is the standard length for a single-cylinder storefront application on a typical aluminum door stile.
2) Does the GMS M100 cylinder take Schlage keys, and can I key it to my existing building keys?
The M100 is cut to the Schlage C keyway, the most common commercial keyway in North America, so it accepts Schlage C blanks and can be keyed into an existing Schlage C system by your locksmith. It is a 5-pin cylinder, which is what a standard Schlage C system uses. Note it is supplied keyed alike, so multiple cylinders ordered together operate on the same key.
3) I need every storefront door in the building on one key. Does the GMS M100 do that?
That is exactly what keyed alike means, and it is how the M100 is supplied. Order the quantity you need for the openings and they all operate from the same key, which is the usual setup for a property manager who wants one key for a row of storefront or entry doors. If you need each door on its own key, or a master key system over the top, that is a keyed-different or masterkeyed order rather than this one.
4) What length mortise cylinder do I need, and is the 1 inch GMS M100 the right one for my door?
1 inch is the standard mortise cylinder length and it is what the M100 is. It suits a normal aluminum storefront stile or a standard commercial mortise lock prep. Where you need something longer is a thick door, a heavy pull or plate stacked behind the cylinder, or a thick glass rail, because the cylinder has to project far enough for the cam to reach the lock hub. Measure the depth from the face of the trim to the cam before you commit; if it exceeds an inch, this one will sit short.
5) Can a mortise cylinder like the GMS M100 be used in a rim exit device?
No. A rim device needs a rim cylinder with a tailpiece, not a threaded mortise cylinder with a cam. The M100 is a conventional mortise cylinder, so it threads into a mortise lock body or an Adams Rite storefront lock. If the cylinder you are replacing sat behind a rim exit device on the pull side, order a Schlage C rim cylinder instead so both keys stay on the same keyway.
6) Is the GMS M100 a small format interchangeable core housing or a solid conventional cylinder?
It is a conventional mortise cylinder, a one-piece pinned cylinder with the Schlage C keyway built in. It is not a core-and-housing setup, so there is no removable core to pull with a control key. If your facility standardizes on SFIC so maintenance can rekey doors in seconds without disassembly, you want an SFIC housing and a separate 6 or 7 pin core, not this cylinder.
7) My old storefront cylinder came out with a different cam. Can I reuse it on the GMS M100?
Cams are the thing to check before ordering, not after. The M100 comes with the Adams Rite and Yale standard cam already fitted, which covers Adams Rite storefront hardware and Yale mortise bodies. If the cylinder you pulled has a Schlage-style or a Sargent-style cam, the old cam will not drive this lock correctly and you should match the cam to the lock body, not to the cylinder you removed. Take the old one with you and compare the tail shape and the throw of the lug.
8) Does the GMS M100 mortise cylinder come with a cam and a set screw ring, or do I have to order those separately?
The cam is included and it is the Adams Rite and Yale standard. What the cylinder does not include is the trim ring or spacer collar some installs need to take up depth, or the mounting screw that clamps the cylinder in an Adams Rite lock body, so if you are working from bare hardware rather than swapping a cylinder out of an existing prep, check the lock body has its retaining screw. Keys are cut to the Schlage C keyway and the cylinders in an order come keyed alike.
9) What finishes does the GMS M100 mortise cylinder come in?
Two: 626 satin chrome and 613 oil rubbed bronze. Satin chrome is the default match for aluminum storefront and most commercial lever trim; oil rubbed bronze is the one to pick if the rest of the door hardware is dark bronze. Both are the same cylinder underneath, solid brass body, Schlage C keyway, Adams Rite and Yale cam.
10) Is the GMS M100 solid brass or plated pot metal?
Solid brass body with a plated finish over it. That matters on an exterior storefront door: brass does not rust like a zinc cast shell, and the cylinder threads hold up when it gets removed and reinstalled during rekeys. The finish over it is either 626 satin chrome or 613 oil rubbed bronze.
