1) What cable sizes does the Thomas & Betts HS40-400 heat shrink tubing fit?
The HS40-400 heavy-wall tubing covers a 2/0 through 350 MCM cable range. It goes on at a minimum expanded inner diameter of 1.5 inches and recovers down to 0.47 inches, so anything in that conductor range can be slid over before heating. Cable outside that range needs a different size in the HS series.
2) Can this heat shrink tubing be direct buried or used in a submersible vault?
Yes. The HS40-400 is built for underground residential distribution, submersible and direct burial work. The factory-applied sealant lines the inside and flows when heated to seal out moisture, and the cross-linked polyolefin wall recovers to a 0.16 inch nominal thickness, which is heavier than most cable jackets.
3) Is this tubing rated for 600 volt secondary cable?
600V is the rating on the HS40-400, which covers secondary and service distribution work. It is not a medium-voltage product, so do not use it on primary URD cable above 600V.
4) What temperature do I need to shrink this tubing, and will a heat gun do it?
Recovery starts at 120 C, so a propane torch with a spreader or a high-output electric gun will do it. A standard low-temp craft gun will not get there reliably. Work the heat around the circumference rather than at one spot until the sealant beads out at both ends.
5) Will this heat shrink hold up in freezing weather and on hot conductors?
The service range is -55 C to 110 C, which covers outdoor winter burial and the operating temperature of loaded secondary conductors. The thermally stabilized cross-linked polyolefin keeps its flexibility at the cold end rather than cracking.
6) Do I have to buy Thomas & Betts HS40-400 tubing in a case, or can I get one piece?
It is sold each, but the order multiple is 10 and the outer package holds 10, so it comes out of the box in tens. Weight runs 13.5 lbs per 100 pieces if you are figuring freight on a larger order.
