1) Can Oatey Hercules 15183 PTFE tape be used on oxygen lines?
Yes. The Hercules 15183 TFE pipe joint tape meets the performance requirements for use on oxygen lines under MIL-T-27720A (ASG). That is the spec medical gas and industrial gas work calls out, which is why this tape gets specified where a general-purpose thread tape would not be accepted.
2) Will PTFE tape work on plastic threads, or do I need a different sealant?
It works on plastic. The Hercules 15183 tape seals threaded pipe, valves, fittings, accessories and controls made from steel, galvanized and black iron, brass, copper, aluminum, stainless steel, glass, synthetic rubber and plastic. Because it is a dry PTFE film rather than a solvent-bearing paste, there is nothing in it to attack plastic threads.
3) Is this tape OK for hot lines and outdoor piping, or will it dry out?
It is resistant to chemicals, heat, corrosion and impacts, it is weather resistant, and it will not freeze, seize or harden with age. That covers exterior runs and lines that cycle hot and cold, which is where a paste dope tends to crack or wash out.
4) Can I take a joint apart later if I use this tape?
Yes, and that is one reason it gets used on serviceable equipment. The PTFE film has lubricity that makes threaded joints easier to assemble and disassemble, so unions, valves and controls you expect to break down again later come apart without galling the threads.
5) What color is Oatey 15183 TFE tape, and does the color mean anything?
