1) Can Oatey Hercules Tape Dope be used on gas lines as well as water?
Yes. Hercules Tape Dope is called out for pipes carrying LP gas, natural gas, oxygen, steam, hot and cold water, acids, solvents, alkalis and nearly every chemical. That makes it a single roll a maintenance tech can carry for both fuel gas and potable water threaded joints rather than stocking separate tapes.
2) Will thread tape prevent galvanic corrosion where I join dissimilar metals?
Hercules Tape Dope has dielectric properties that minimize galvanic action, which matters on a steel-to-brass or steel-to-copper threaded transition. It also protects the threads against chemical corrosive action.
3) How many wraps of Hercules Tape Dope do I need on a threaded fitting?
Fewer than with a standard economy tape. Hercules Tape Dope is a thick tape, and Oatey states it requires few wraps because of that thickness. It is also self-lubricating, so the joint pulls up without galling.
4) Does this tape hold up on outdoor or unheated piping?
It is rated weather resistant and will not harden, crack or crumble, so exterior hose bibbs, irrigation risers and unconditioned mechanical spaces are fair use. It also breaks cleanly off the roll without shedding, so you are not picking shreds out of a threaded joint.
5) Do I still need pipe dope if I use Hercules Tape Dope?
No. Tape Dope is the sealant itself, a self-lubricating PTFE-type thread tape meant to replace brushed-on pipe joint compound on threaded connections. Wrap the male threads in the direction of thread engagement and make the joint up.
