OATEY 15445 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can Oatey Hercules Pro Dope thread sealant be used on plastic pipe like PVC or CPVC?
No. Pro Dope is made for metal threaded pipe, and the instructions say not to use it on plastic pipe or on LP gas lines. Use a sealant rated for plastic threads on PVC and CPVC joints instead.
2) What systems can I use Hercules Pro Dope on - will it hold on steam and gas lines?
Pro Dope is rated for threaded metal pipe carrying water, natural gas, air, steam, ammonia, brine, and diluted acids and alkalis. It handles air and steam pressure up to 200 psi and stays serviceable from 0F to 350F in service. The one gas exception is LP: do not use it on LP gas lines.
3) How cold can it be in the shop or on site when I apply Oatey Pro Dope?
Application range is -15F to 122F (-26C to 50C). That is the temperature at the time you brush it on, which is a different number from the 0F to 350F range the cured joint will take in service. Below -15F, warm the pail before use.
4) How much sealant is in the Oatey 15445 pail and how heavy is it to handle?
Model 15445 is the 5 gallon pail of Hercules Pro Dope, listed at 72 lbs. That is a two-hand lift off a truck, so plan on decanting into smaller cans for the van. It is a gray, oil-based compound.
5) Which metals is Pro Dope safe on - will it attack brass or stainless fittings?
Listed material compatibility covers aluminum, brass, copper and stainless steel, plus CPVC and PVC. Note the separate instruction not to apply it to plastic pipe, so in practice treat it as a metal-thread sealant: galvanized, black iron, brass and stainless threaded connections.
6) Will thread dope run out of the bucket or harden up in storage on the shelf?
Pro Dope is formulated not to leak or drip out of the container, and it resists hardening and cracking in the joint. The consistency is uniform and smooth for brushing, and it wipes off hands without solvent.
7) Does pipe dope help with rusted threaded joints that have to come apart again later?
Pro Dope prevents rust and corrosion on the threads, which is why maintenance crews favor it on unions and fittings that get broken out for service. Being oil-based and resistant to hardening, it does not set up hard the way a cured anaerobic thread locker does.
