1) Can Megaloc thread sealant be used on potable water lines?
Yes. Oatey Hercules Megaloc is safe for drinking water lines, so it can go on domestic hot and cold supply piping. It seals both plastic and metal threaded pipe and fittings, which covers most of what a service plumber runs into on a potable repipe or fixture swap.
2) Will Megaloc work on gas piping, and what pressure will it hold?
Megaloc holds gas pressure to 2,600 psi and hydraulic pressure to 12,000 psi, which puts it well past residential and commercial gas distribution pressures. It is not recommended for lines carrying concentrated acids, alkali, ketone or oxygen, so keep it off oxygen service and chemical feed lines.
3) What pipe materials can Oatey 15806 Megaloc be used on?
Megaloc is listed for ABS, CPVC, PVC and other plastics as well as copper, brass, aluminum and stainless steel. That mix is why it gets used as a one-can sealant on a truck instead of carrying a separate plastic-safe and metal-safe dope.
4) Do I have to wait for thread sealant to cure before pressure testing?
No wait. Megaloc sets soft with no cure time required, so joints can be pressurized right after assembly. That is the practical difference from a hardening pipe dope or a thread-locking anaerobic compound, and it is why it suits repair work where the water has to go back on the same visit.
5) What temperature range does Megaloc hold up in once the joint is in service?
The sealed joint performs from -50 F to 400 F. Application is a separate limit: apply it between -25 F (-31 C) and 122 F (50 C). So you can dope a joint in a cold crawlspace in winter, but not in deep sub-zero outdoor conditions.
6) Should I use thread sealant or PTFE tape on plastic threaded fittings?
For plastic, a soft-setting paste like Megaloc is the safer choice. It is rated for PVC, CPVC and ABS and stays soft rather than hardening, so it does not add the wedging effect that over-wrapped tape can create on a tapered plastic thread. It also seals metal threads, so one product covers a mixed plastic-to-brass transition.
7) Will Megaloc dry out and crack in a joint I may need to break loose later?
It resists hardening and cracking, and because it never fully cures hard the joint can still be broken with a wrench later. That is the trade-off against a thread locker: Megaloc seals, it does not permanently bond the connection.
8) Does this Megaloc come with a brush, or do I need to apply it with something?
An applicator is built into the lid, so nothing extra is needed to dope a thread. The 8 oz can holds about 0.019 cubic feet of product and weighs roughly 0.7 lb.
9) Will thread sealant stain a tenant's fixtures or my crew's clothes?
