OATEY 15420 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use Oatey Hercules Pro Dope on plastic pipe or CPVC threads?
No. Pro Dope is meant for metal threaded pipe, and the instructions say not to use it on plastic pipe. If you are threading PVC or CPVC, use a sealant rated for plastics instead. The compatibility list does show aluminum, brass, copper, CPVC, PVC and stainless steel, so if the plastic side is a fitting mating to metal threads, follow the do-not-use-on-plastic-pipe direction and keep the dope on the metal male threads only.
2) Is Pro Dope approved for gas lines?
Pro Dope can be used on natural gas piping, but it must not be used on LP (propane) gas lines. Same product also covers water, air, steam, ammonia, brine, and diluted acids and alkalis.
3) What pressure and temperature can this pipe dope hold on a steam line?
The Hercules Pro Dope thread sealant withstands air and steam pressure up to 200 psi, and the joint service range runs from 0 F to 350 F. That covers low pressure steam and hot water heating work on metal threaded pipe.
4) How cold can it be on site when I apply Pro Dope?
Application range is -15 F to 122 F (-26 C to 50 C), so it goes on in winter conditions outdoors. Note that is the temperature for applying it, not the in-service range of the finished joint, which runs 0 F to 350 F.
5) Pipe dope or PTFE tape for threaded black iron and galvanized joints?
For metal threaded pipe, Pro Dope is an oil-based compound that fills the thread and also prevents rust and corrosion on the joint, which tape does not do. It resists hardening and cracking, so the joint can be broken down later. Tape is the choice on plastic threads, where this dope is not to be used. Plenty of trades run both, tape then dope over it, on metal.
6) Will Pro Dope work on stainless steel and brass fittings, or will it gall the threads?
Stainless steel, brass, copper and aluminum are all on the compatibility list for this sealant, so it suits mixed-metal threaded assemblies. Because it is oil-based and resists hardening, it also helps keep stainless threads from seizing and lets the joint come apart on a later service call.
