1) Can Oatey Hercules Real Tuff PTFE thread sealant be used on potable drinking water lines?
Yes. Real Tuff is suitable for use with all liquids, including drinking water, and with gases except oxygen. It contains no heavy metals or volatile solvents, which is why it is used on potable water piping as well as gas.
2) Will Real Tuff thread sealant attack PVC or CPVC threads?
No. The Hercules Real Tuff PTFE sealant is rated for use on all metals and on PVC, CPVC and ABS plastics. Its listed material compatibility covers ABS, aluminum, brass, CPVC, copper, PVC and stainless steel, so it works on mixed metal-to-plastic threaded joints without a separate product.
3) How long do I have to wait before pressurizing a joint sealed with Real Tuff?
No wait. Real Tuff is a soft-set sealant with no cure time, so joints can be put into service immediately after assembly. That is the main reason service techs choose it over cure-type pipe dopes when a repair has to go back on line the same visit.
4) What temperature and pressure can Real Tuff PTFE thread sealant handle in service?
In service the sealed joint withstands temperatures from 50 degrees F to 550 degrees F, with a maximum working hydraulic pressure of 12,000 psi. It also holds tight through expansion and contraction and resists strong acids, alkalis and ketones.
5) Is Oatey Real Tuff approved for oxygen lines?
No. Real Tuff is rated for all liquids and gases except oxygen. For oxygen service you need a sealant specifically listed as oxygen compatible, so do not substitute this one on an O2 line.
6) Can I apply this pipe sealant outdoors in cold weather?
Yes, within limits. The application temperature range for Oatey 15625 Real Tuff runs from -25 degrees F (-31 C) up to 122 degrees F (50 C). Note that is the range for applying it, not the service range of the finished joint, which is much wider.
7) Should I use PTFE paste sealant or PTFE tape on threaded pipe joints?
Paste like Hercules Real Tuff carries PTFE particles that fill cracks and thread imperfections, so it both lubricates and seals threads that are nicked, worn or slightly out of round, where tape can bridge a gap and leak. It will not run or drip out of the joint and is non-flammable. Tape is cleaner to carry and fine on new, clean threads; for reused fittings, high pressure, or aggressive chemicals, the paste is the better call. Many trades use both together.
