Yes. The Hercules GRIPP all-purpose pipe joint and gasket seal is safe for drinking water lines, so it can go on domestic supply threads as well as drain and vent work.

No. GRIPP is a non-petroleum, hydrocarbon-based compound made for all metals plus PVC, ABS and CPVC plastics. Listed material compatibility covers ABS, CPVC, PVC and plastics generally, along with aluminum, brass, copper and stainless steel, so one can goes on a plastic trap adapter and a brass or steel nipple on the same job. That matters because petroleum-based dopes can attack plastic threads.

The GRIPP seal is rated to 12,000 PSI hydraulic and 2,600 PSI gas on steel pipe, over a service range of minus 90 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. That covers threaded gas piping and high pressure hydraulic joints, not just low pressure water.

Application temperature runs from 20 degrees F to 110 degrees F (minus 6 C to 43 C). That is the window for brushing it on, separate from what the cured joint will take in service, which is much wider. In a cold crawlspace or an unheated mechanical room in winter, warm the can and the work area above 20 F before you start.

GRIPP is non-separating and will not harden or shrink, so the compound stays put in the threads instead of drying out and letting the joint weep. It is a sealant, not an adhesive or thread locker, so a threaded union made up with it can still be broken loose for service.

A brushable compound like the Hercules GRIPP seal fills thread imperfections and stays pliable, which is what you want on a joint that sees vibration, thermal swing, or later disassembly, and it works as a gasket seal as well as a thread seal. Tape does not double as a gasket dressing and does not fill a marred thread. GRIPP also covers metal and plastic threads from the same can, so a stocking truck can carry one product for brass, steel, copper, PVC, CPVC and ABS.
