OATEY 15703 Hercules® 4 oz. Brush-On Blue Block™ Thread and Gasket Seal

The Oatey Hercules Blue Block brush-on thread and gasket seal is rated for use on ABS, CPVC, PVC and other plastics, along with copper, brass, aluminum and stainless steel. That covers the usual mixed-material threaded work, a PVC male adapter into a brass valve, a CPVC riser into a steel nipple, without a separate product for each side of the joint.

Application window is 20F to 110F (-6C to 43C). That is the temperature at the time you brush it on, not what the finished joint will see in service. Below 20F, warm the material and the pipe or wait for the day to come up, or the compound will not flow or wet the threads properly. On an unconditioned mechanical room or a winter rooftop job, that lower limit is the one that bites.

In service on steel pipe, the seal performs from -90F through 450F, and it is rated to 12,000 psi hydraulic and 2,600 psi gas. Do not confuse those numbers with the brush-on window: you apply it between 20F and 110F, then it holds the much wider service range once cured. The pressure ratings are the compound's, so your joint is still limited by the pipe, fitting and valve rating, whichever is lowest.

Tape is fine for low-pressure water on clean, undamaged threads. A brush-on compound is what you reach for when the joint sees high pressure, heat cycling, expansion and contraction, or vibration, pump discharge, compressor lines, hydraulic connections, equipment on a skid. Blue Block is formulated for exactly that: it stays flexible rather than setting hard, so the seal survives movement that shears tape out of a joint. It also does what tape cannot, which is seal gaskets, flanges, valve bodies and tank fittings, not just male threads.

Both. It is a pipe joint and gasket sealing compound, so it is intended for flange faces and gaskets as well as threads, plus valves, pumps and tank fittings. On a bolted flange, brushing it on the gasket gives you a seal that tolerates the expansion and contraction of a heated line rather than relying on bolt torque alone.

Stainless steel is on the compatible materials list, along with aluminum, brass and copper. Brushing a compound into stainless threads serves two purposes on that material: it seals, and it lubricates the engagement as you pull the joint up, which is what you want on stainless-to-stainless where dry threads tend to seize.

4 oz of compound, blue in color, supplied as a brush-on, so the applicator comes with the can rather than being bought separately. Net weight on the packaged unit is 0.45 pounds. For a maintenance truck or a shop bench doing occasional threaded repairs, the 4 oz size is the working size; a repipe crew buttoning up dozens of joints a day will run through it fast.
