OATEY 15520 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can Hercules GRIPP pipe joint sealant be used on potable water lines?
Yes. The Hercules GRIPP all-purpose pipe joint and gasket seal is safe for drinking water lines. It is a non-petroleum, hydrocarbon-based compound, so it works on domestic water piping as well as other systems.
2) Will this pipe joint compound work on PVC and CPVC, or is it metal only?
It goes on both. Oatey 15520 GRIPP is rated for all metals plus PVC, ABS and CPVC plastics, and the compatibility list covers aluminum, brass, copper and stainless steel as well. That makes it usable across a mixed-material building where you would otherwise stock two compounds.
3) What temperature does the joint have to be when I apply Hercules GRIPP?
Apply it between 20 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit (-6 to 43 C). That is the application window, not the service window. Once cured in place on steel pipe the joint holds from minus 90 to 450 degrees F. In an unheated crawlspace in winter, warm the material and the pipe before brushing it on.
4) What pressure will this pipe joint sealant hold?
The GRIPP compound is rated to 12,000 PSI hydraulic and 2,600 PSI gas on steel pipe. That covers threaded gas piping and high pressure hydraulic joints, well beyond anything on a normal domestic water system.
5) Will pipe dope like this harden in the can or separate on the shelf?
The Hercules GRIPP formula is non-separating and will not harden or shrink. For a maintenance shop that opens a can a few times a year, it stays brushable instead of setting up, and it will not shrink out of the threads after the joint is made.
6) Is Oatey 15520 a thread sealant or a gasket sealer?
Both. It is sold as an all-purpose pipe joint and gasket seal, so it brushes onto threaded joints and onto gasketed flange faces. If you only need a thread sealant for plastic-to-plastic threads, PTFE tape is the simpler choice; use GRIPP where you want one compound covering threads, gaskets, metals and plastics on the same job.
