OATEY 15711 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can Oatey Hercules Blue Block thread sealant be used on PVC and CPVC plastic threads, or is it steel pipe only?
Blue Block brush-on thread and gasket seal is rated for ABS, CPVC, PVC and other plastics as well as aluminum, brass, copper and stainless steel, so plastic threaded joints are within its listed material compatibility. The temperature claim of -90 to 450 degrees F in the product literature is given specifically for steel pipe, so don't carry that range over to a plastic joint.
2) Will Blue Block hold on a high-pressure hydraulic line?
Yes. The Hercules Blue Block compound is rated to 12,000 psi hydraulic and 2,600 psi gas pressure, which covers hydraulic power lines, compressed air and fuel gas threaded joints well beyond ordinary domestic plumbing.
3) Should I use brush-on Blue Block or PTFE tape on threaded pipe joints?
Tape is fine for low-pressure water threads, but the brush-on compound is what you want where the joint sees vibration, thermal cycling or high pressure: it flows into the full thread profile and sets up as a tough, flexible seal that tolerates expansion and contraction. It also goes beyond threads, covering gaskets, flanges, valves, pumps and tanks, which tape cannot do.
4) Can I use this as a gasket dressing on a flange, not just on threads?
Yes, it's an all-purpose pipe joint and gasket sealing compound. Oatey lists flanges, gaskets, valves, pumps and tanks alongside threaded joints, so brushing it on a flange gasket face is an intended use.
5) Is Blue Block thread sealant safe on stainless steel and brass fittings without galling?
Stainless steel, brass, copper and aluminum are all on the listed compatibility, so you can brush it on stainless and brass threads. The compound itself is blue, which makes it easy to see coverage on bright metal before you make up the joint.
