1) Can Hercules Climate Smooth soldering paste be used on potable water copper lines?
Yes. The Hercules Climate Smooth paste flux is a lead-free formula, so it is suitable for copper potable water piping work. It also meets Commercial Item Description A-A-51145, which supersedes Fed Spec O-F-506, the flux specification most commonly called out on commercial and government plumbing jobs.
2) Will this Oatey soldering paste still spread in cold weather or a hot truck?
That is the point of the Climate Smooth formula. It is made for extreme climate temperatures year round and will not lose its consistency in high or low temperatures, so a can that rode in a service van through a freeze or sat in summer heat still brushes on the same instead of going runny or stiffening up.
3) Does this flux work with lead-free solder, or only 50/50?
It works with all solders, including the higher melting non-lead bearing alloys, plus 95/5, 50/50, 40/60 and 60/40. One can covers both lead-free potable water work and the older alloys used on non-potable or HVAC lines.
4) Do I still have to clean the copper before using Hercules Climate Smooth paste flux?
The flux is self-cleaning and dissolves oxides during heating, and it penetrates a light oil film, so it handles tube that is not surgically clean. Good practice is still to ream and brush or sand the tube and fitting; the self-cleaning action is insurance against surface oxide, not a substitute for prepping the joint.
5) Is Hercules Climate Smooth a petroleum-based or water-soluble flux?
Petroleum-based. It is a smooth amber paste flux, which is the traditional soldering paste plumbers use on copper tube and fittings. If your spec calls specifically for a water-soluble or water-flushable flux, this is not that product.
