1) Will Hercules Root Destroyer kill the trees and shrubs in the yard above the sewer line?
No. Hercules Root Destroyer is a non-acid, non-caustic herbicide that kills root growth inside the sewer line without destroying trees, shrubs, or other vegetation above it. The crystals act on the root mass that has penetrated the pipe, not on the plant's whole root system. That is the distinction that matters on a residential or multi-family property where the tree stays and the blockage has to go.
2) Can I use Hercules Root Destroyer in Connecticut?
No. Root Destroyer is not for use in Connecticut, and it is restricted in some jurisdictions in Canada. If you manage property in CT, this is the wrong product and you will need a mechanical solution or a locally approved treatment instead. Everywhere else, it is cleared for sewer type lines.
3) My ejector pump keeps overloading and tripping. Will root treatment help?
Often, yes. When roots restrict the discharge line, a sump or ejector pump works against a partly blocked pipe, which is what overloads the motor and burns it out. Root Destroyer is formulated to eliminate that root growth in the line and prevent it from coming back, so the pump is pumping into an open pipe again. It treats the cause of the restriction, not the pump itself, so if the line is clear the problem is elsewhere.
4) What makes Root Destroyer crystals different from a regular granular drain chemical?
Grain size and a wetting agent. Root Destroyer uses large root grade crystals blended with an active wetting agent so the crystals cling to the root mass rather than washing straight through the line. They dissolve slowly, which keeps the herbicide in contact with the roots long enough to kill them and clear the blockage. A fine granular product tends to flush past the roots before it can do anything.
5) Will Root Destroyer clear a sewer backup and the odor that comes with it, or do I still need to snake the line?
Root Destroyer works on root penetration specifically. It helps eliminate overflow damage, sewage flow restriction, and back-up odors caused by roots growing into the line, and it prevents regrowth. Because the crystals dissolve slowly, it is a treatment over time rather than an instant clear. If the line is fully stopped and water will not move at all, mechanical clearing comes first and the crystals go in afterward to keep the roots from returning. Grease, scale, or a collapsed pipe are not root problems and this will not touch them.
