OATEY 60260 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use this cement on a drain line that still has water in it?
That is what the Wet Set formulation is for. The Hercules 60260 is a hot formulation intended for very wet conditions or when the line has to be pressurized quickly, so it is the one to reach for on a repair you cannot fully drain or a job that goes back into service right away. A standard regular-set cement is the better choice when the joint is dry and you have time to cure.
2) Is the Hercules 60260 cement approved for potable water lines?
Yes. The 60260 complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements and meets ASTM D2564, and Oatey lists potable water among its applications along with irrigation, pool, pressure pipe and DWV.
3) Does this PVC cement meet low-VOC rules for jobs in California?
It does. The Hercules 60260 is a low VOC solvent cement meeting SCAQMD Rule 1168/316A and BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, which is what gets it onto work in the South Coast and Bay Area districts. All Hercules solvent cement and primer products are also certified to UL Greenguard Gold, which matters on schools and healthcare specs that call for low-emitting materials.
4) How hot can it be outside when I glue PVC with this?
Application tops out at 110 degrees F (43 degrees C) for the Hercules 60260. Above that, the solvent flashes off too fast for a reliable weld. Service temperature of the finished joint is rated to 60 degrees C.
5) Is blue PVC cement the same thing as purple primer?
They are two different products. The Hercules 60260 is blue solvent cement, the glue that actually welds the PVC joint. Purple primer is a separate solvent that softens and cleans the pipe and socket first, and many jurisdictions require visible primer on PVC pressure joints. Buy the primer separately if your inspector or spec calls for it.
