OATEY 35260 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use Oatey Cryo-Tek Original antifreeze in a galvanized or CPVC system?
No. Hercules Cryo-Tek Original (Oatey 35260) is not for use with galvanized, CPVC or aluminum. If your hydronic loop has galvanized piping, aluminum boiler components or CPVC, this fluid is the wrong choice. It is intended for systems built with metal, plastic and rubber piping, fittings and seals outside those three exclusions.
2) Is Cryo-Tek Original a ready-to-use antifreeze or do I dilute it?
Cryo-Tek Original ships as a blend of 45 percent virgin propylene glycol, so it is already a pre-mixed solution rather than a concentrate you cut on site. It comes in a 5 gallon pail under Oatey part 35260.
3) Does this hydronic antifreeze also protect against corrosion and scale, or do I need a separate inhibitor?
No separate inhibitor package is needed. Cryo-Tek Original carries a triple protection inhibitor that stabilizes pH to prevent corrosion, chelates hard water minerals, and inhibits scale and sediment formation. That is why it is specified for heating systems that need both freeze protection and corrosion prevention.
4) Is propylene glycol antifreeze like Cryo-Tek safe if it leaks near a potable or food area?
Cryo-Tek is rated GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) for incidental contact with food, which is why it gets used in food service buildings, kitchens and similar facilities rather than an ethylene glycol fluid. That covers incidental contact only, not intentional addition to potable water.
5) Will Cryo-Tek Original attack the rubber seals and gaskets in my boiler loop?
It is formulated for systems fabricated with metal, plastics and rubber piping, fittings, seals and other parts, so standard rubber seals and gaskets in a hydronic loop are within its stated compatibility. The exceptions are galvanized, CPVC and aluminum.
6) How do I tell Cryo-Tek in a system from plain water when I drain it?
The fluid is dyed blue, so a sample drawn from a drain valve or a purge at the boiler will show color if the loop still carries glycol. Useful when you are checking a system you did not fill yourself before topping off with Oatey 35260.
7) What size container does Oatey 35260 come in for a multi-zone fill?
One unit of 35260 is a 5 gallon pail of Cryo-Tek Original. For a larger hydronic system you order multiples of the pail; there is a single model on the Cryo-Tek Original 5 gallon item, part number 35260.
