OATEY 35287 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can Cryo-Tek-100 antifreeze be used in a galvanized or CPVC piping system?
No. Hercules Cryo-Tek-100 is not for use with galvanized, CPVC or aluminum. It is intended for systems fabricated with metal, plastics and rubber piping, fittings, seals and other parts, so if your hydronic loop has galvanized pipe, CPVC or aluminum components anywhere in it, this is the wrong fluid for that system.
2) Is Oatey Cryo-Tek-100 approved for Rinnai boilers?
Yes, Cryo-Tek-100 is approved for use in Rinnai I-Series boilers. That is the only boiler approval stated for the product, so for other makes check the boiler manufacturer's own glycol requirements.
3) What is Cryo-Tek-100 antifreeze actually made of, ethylene or propylene glycol?
It's a propylene glycol fluid, a blend of 55 percent virgin propylene glycol. Propylene glycol is the glycol type specified where incidental food or potable contact is a concern, and Cryo-Tek is rated GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) for incidental contact with food.
4) Does Cryo-Tek-100 protect against corrosion and scale, or just freezing?
Both. It's made for heating systems that need freeze protection plus corrosion prevention. The triple protection inhibitor package stabilizes pH to prevent corrosion, chelates hard water minerals, and inhibits scale and sediment formation, which matters on a closed loop you don't want to flush every season.
5) Is Cryo-Tek-100 safe to use near a potable water or food service application?
Cryo-Tek carries a GRAS designation (Generally Recognized As Safe) for incidental contact with food, which is why it gets specified in commercial kitchens, food plants and similar facilities where a heating loop runs near product. That covers incidental contact only, not use as a potable water additive.
6) Why is the Cryo-Tek antifreeze pink, and does the color mean anything?
The fluid is pink. On a hydronic system that color is how you tell at a glance that the loop is charged with glycol rather than plain water, and it makes a weeping joint or a leaking air vent easy to spot during a walkthrough.
