The 1006 series is the strongest and most versatile electric strike available. The dual interlocking plunger design and heavy duty stainless steel construction, enables it to exceed every standard developed for electric strikes. HES 1006-J-630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the HES 1006 electric strike fit my existing ANSI 4-7/8 inch frame prep?
That is exactly what the 1006 is built around. The faceplate is 4-7/8 inches and the body is 1-11/16 inches wide by 2-1/16 inches deep, so it drops into a standard ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike prep in either a metal or a wood frame. Full keeper shims are included for horizontal adjustment, which is how you take up gap variation between the latch and the keeper without re-cutting the frame.
2) Which HES 1006 faceplate do I order for a Sargent 8200 mortise lock?
KM. On the 1006, faceplate choice is driven by where the deadlatch sits relative to the latchbolt, and Sargent 7800, 8200 and 9200 series mortise locks have the deadlatch below the latchbolt, which is the KM plate. The same KM plate covers Accurate, Arrow, Corbin/Russwin, Falcon 1992 M Series and Yale 8800. If the deadbolt on that opening is being used as a night latch, you want NM instead. In a wood frame with the deeper cut, the 9 inch KM-2 plate is the equivalent.
3) What faceplate does the HES 1006 need for a standard cylindrical lockset?
The J plate, 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inches, covers cylindrical locksets with up to a 3/4 inch latch throw and any lockset with a center-lined bolt. That is the most common pick for a cylindrical lever or knob on a hollow metal frame. For a wood frame you order J2 instead, which is the same application in a 9 by 1-3/8 inch plate.
4) Does the HES 1006 work with a mortise lock that has a deadbolt?
Yes, and the plate you pick decides how the deadbolt behaves. The strike body accommodates up to a 1 inch deadbolt. If the deadbolt is used only as a night latch, the N, ND or NM plates apply depending on lock brand. If the deadbolt is a true deadbolt, the H family (H, HD, HM, HT, HTD) applies and the strike will not release while that deadbolt is extended, which is the behavior most security specs want. Note that means an access control credential will not open the door once someone throws the deadbolt.
5) Should I use a fail-safe or fail-secure electric strike on a fire rated door?
Fail secure, and on the 1006 that is not a preference, it is the condition of the fire listing. The UL 10C ratings, 3 hour on a single door and 1-1/2 hour on a double, apply to the fail secure configuration only. Fail secure also means the door stays locked when power drops, so egress has to come from the lever on the inside, which is normal on a fire door. Fail safe is offered on the 1006 for openings where the door must unlock on power loss, but do not put it on a rated opening.
6) How much force will an HES 1006 electric strike hold on an exterior door?
2,500 lbs static and 350 ft-lbs dynamic in fail secure, with an endurance rating of 1,000,000 cycles, in stainless steel. It is ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1 and UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use, plus ANSI A250.13-2003 windstorm listed and Florida Building Code approved. That combination is what qualifies it for a high-traffic exterior or storm-rated opening rather than an interior office door.
7) What voltage and current does the HES 1006 electric strike need?
It runs 12 or 24VDC continuous duty off the same unit, no jumper swap needed at order time. Draw is .45 amps at 12VDC and .25 amps at 24VDC. The DC has to be well filtered, ripple under 1 volt RMS, or the solenoid buzzes and the strike misbehaves. If you are feeding it from AC, the 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier handles that, and the 2005M3 SMART Pac III is the in-line option for cleaning up and controlling the supply.
8) Can an electric strike be installed in a wood frame, or do I need a hollow metal frame?
Wood frames are covered. The difference is the faceplate: wood frame applications use the taller 9 by 1-3/8 inch plates (J2, K2, KM-2, N-2, T-2, A-2, H-2) rather than the 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch plates used in metal. Pick the wood plate that matches your lock the same way you would in metal, by deadlatch position and whether a deadbolt is in play. 9) Will the HES 1006 accept a Schlage or Yale mortise lock?
Both, with the right plate. Schlage and Yale 8700 mortise locks with the deadlatch above the latchbolt take the KD plate; Yale 8800 puts the deadlatch below and takes KM. Sargent 7700 and 8100 also sit in the KD group. In a wood frame, Schlage and Yale 8700 fall under N-2, T-2 or A-2 depending on how the 1 inch deadbolt is used.
10) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand HES 1006 electric strike?
Neither. The 1006 is non-handed, so one unit covers both swings and you can stock a single part across a building. Handing is not one of the choices you make when ordering; faceplate, fail safe or fail secure, and finish are.
11) Can I get a door position or latch monitor on the HES 1006 strike?
Two monitoring options are offered: LBM, a latchbolt monitor, and LBSM, a latchbolt strike monitor. Both have to be specified when you order, they are not field-added. One caveat that catches integrators out: the monitor switches will not work with every one of the 27 interchangeable faceplates, so pick your plate and your monitor together rather than in sequence.
12) Which electric strike works with an Adams Rite hookbolt?
The 1006 with the R faceplate handles a hookbolt up to 1 inch throw, and Adams Rite is the named lockset for it. That is a different plate from anything in the cylindrical or mortise latchbolt families, so ordering the standard J or KM plate for a hookbolt opening will not work. For ASSA model 504 mortise locks with two latchbolts and a center deadlatch, the HT plate is the one.
13) Is the HES 1006 electric strike suitable for an exterior door exposed to weather?
It is UL 1034 listed as suitable for outdoor use, in stainless steel construction, and it carries the ANSI A250.13-2003 windstorm listing plus Florida Building Code approval. For a door taking direct rain, add the 1000-102 rain guard. On coastal or storm-rated work, the windstorm listing is usually the line item the specifier is looking for.
14) Is the HES 1006 UL 294 listed for access control use?
Yes, UL 294 listed, which is the access control system units standard your AHJ or security spec will typically call for when the strike is tied into a card reader or intercom system. It is also ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, the highest grade in the electric strike standard. Accessories for integration include the 2004M ElectroLynx adapter and the 2006M plug-in buzzer.
15) What finish options does the HES 1006 electric strike come in?
