1) Will the HES 5000 electric strike fit a shallow aluminum jamb with limited depth behind it?
The 5000 Series was built for exactly that. The strike body depth is 1-1/16 inches, which is what lets it go into low profile openings where there is not much room behind the jamb. Overall product depth is 1-3/8 inches. If the cavity behind your jamb is shallower than that, measure before you cut, because the keeper pin locking design is inside the body and there is no shallower version of it.
2) What latchbolt throw will the HES 5000 electric strike accept?
Latchbolts from 1/2 inch up to 5/8 inch throw. The 5/8 inch case needs a 1/8 inch door gap to work, so if your door is hung tight against the frame you are effectively limited to the shorter throws. It is built around a cylindrical lockset latchbolt, not a mortise deadlatch or a rim exit device latch.
3) Do I have to order the HES 5000 handed, and can I set it fail safe or fail secure in the field?
Non-handed, so one part covers left and right hand openings and you are not stocking two versions across a building. Fail safe versus fail secure is field selectable on the unit itself, and voltage is dual 12 or 24 VDC/VAC. That means the same strike body works whether the door has to unlock on a fire alarm drop or stay locked through a power loss, decided at install rather than on the purchase order.
4) What faceplate do I order with the HES 5000 for an ANSI metal jamb versus an aluminum or wood frame?
Five faceplates cover the 5000 Series and the frame decides which. The 501 (4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches, square corners) is for cylindrical locksets in ANSI metal jambs. The 501A is the same size with radius corners and universal mounting tabs for aluminum frames. The 502 (7-15/16 x 1-7/16 inches) and 503 (6-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches) are radius corner plates with mounting tabs, the 502 for aluminum frames. The 504 (10 x 1-3/8 inches) uses four point mounting for wood installations. All five carry ANSI/BHMA numbers E09321, E09322 and E09323.
5) What is the difference between the HES 5000 and the 5000-LBM?
The LBM adds a latchbolt monitor. The plain 5000 is the strike body only and tells your access control system nothing about the door; the 5000-LBM signals whether the latchbolt is actually seated in the keeper, which is what you need if the system has to prove the door relatched rather than just that the strike de-energized. Everything else, including the field selectable fail safe/fail secure operation, is the same on both.
6) Can I run the HES 5000 strike on AC power continuously?
No. DC is continuous duty; AC is intermittent duty only, so an AC supply can only be used for momentary release, not to hold the strike energized. Current draw is .24 amps at 12 VDC/VAC and .12 amps at 24 VDC/VAC, which is what you size the supply from. If you are feeding it from an AC transformer and need continuous operation, the 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier is the accessory that converts it.
7) Will the HES 5000 work on a door with a spring hinge or wind pressure pushing the latch into the keeper?
No. The 5000 is not preload capable, so if the door sits under pressure from stack effect, a closer, weatherstripping or wind load, the latchbolt binds in the keeper and the strike may not release. For preloaded openings you need a strike specifically rated for it. The 5000 is the right choice on a door that hangs free and closes without the latch loading against the keeper.
8) Can I use the HES 5000 electric strike with a mortise lock or a rim exit device?
No. The 5000 is built for cylindrical locksets with a latchbolt, and the faceplate options are all specified for cylindrical lock prep. For a mortise lock, the Von Duprin 6210 (24 VDC fail-secure, UL 10C fire rated) or the Securitron MUNL mortise unlatch strike are the right type; the Von Duprin 6400 is a modular Grade 1 strike that handles mortise or cylindrical. 9) What is a fire-rated alternative to the HES 5000 electric strike for a cylindrical lockset on a labeled opening?
The HES 5000 Series is not fire rated, so on a labeled cylindrical opening look at the Adams Rite 7240, a fire-rated electric strike for cylindrical locksets with 5/8 inch latchbolt projection, or the Von Duprin 4211 32D, a Grade 1 fire-rated electric strike for cylindrical locks with 12/24 VDC field-selectable operation. Both take the same cylindrical latchbolt the 5000 accepts, so the lockset on the door does not have to change.
10) What should be used instead of the HES 5000 electric strike in an aluminum storefront jamb?
The HES 5000 Series is set up for metal and wood frames. 11) Is the SDC 15 Series a substitute for the HES 5000-LBM with latchbolt monitor?
Only on the latch side. The SDC 15 Series is a value electric strike taking a 5/8 inch latchbolt at 12/24 VDC, which lines up with the 5000 Series accepting latchbolts up to 5/8 inch throw on 12/24 VDC. What it does not carry is the monitoring the 5000-LBM variant adds.
