HES ES100-15LH-IPS 630 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the HES ES100 wireless electric strike work with the locksets already on my doors, or do I have to change the locks?
The ES100 Aperio strike works with most cylindrical and mortise latchbolt locksets, including 1 inch deadbolts on the 1600 models. That's the whole point of a strike retrofit: you keep the existing lockset, you don't drill the door, and you don't need a power transfer through the hinge. What you do have to match is the faceplate to the latch geometry, 1J for cylindrical locksets up to 3/4 inch throw, 1K/1KD/1KM for mortise locksets depending on whether the deadlatch sits above or below the latchbolt.
2) Which HES ES100 model do I order for a mortise lock with a deadbolt versus a plain latchbolt?
Latchbolt only, order a 1500 or 1600 latchbolt kit: ES100-15LH, ES100-15LMH, ES100-16LH or ES100-16LMH. If the opening uses a deadbolt as well, you need a 1600 body, ES100-16SH or ES100-16SMH, which are the latchbolt-and-deadbolt kits. Deadbolt faceplates (the 1DB and 1DB-2 groups, including the 1NTD for a normally extended 1 inch deadbolt without a deadlatch) are only offered for the 1600. The M in the model number is the monitored version, latch and door position monitoring; the H means the kit ships with the Wiegand hub.
3) How deep does the frame have to be for an HES ES100 strike, and does it fit a wood frame?
Two body depths: the 1500 body is 1-3/8 inches (35 mm) deep and the 1600 body is 1-5/8 inches (41 mm). Prep width is 1-3/4 inches. Both hollow metal and wood frames are covered, but the faceplate group changes with the frame: metal frames take the 1LB group at 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches, wood frames take the 1LB-2 group at 9 x 1-3/8 inches. Measure the jamb cavity before you pick 1500 or 1600, since the deeper 1600 is what carries the deadbolt options.
4) Can I put an Aperio ES100 strike on a fire rated door?
Yes, on fail secure. The ES100 carries UL 10C fire rating for a 3-hour single door and 1-1/2 hour double door, fail secure only, and is CAN/ULC-S104 conformant, NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 compliant, plus California Fire Marshal listed. It is also UL 294 listed for access control and UL 1034 burglary resistant. If your opening needs fail safe (unlocked on power loss), that configuration is not the fire rated one, so a fire door has to stay fail secure and use the door hardware itself for egress.
5) Is the HES ES100 fail safe or fail secure, and what happens when the batteries die?
Fail secure is the standard operation, and the door stays locked from the outside if power drops. The strike runs on two AA lithium ion batteries (included), rated at roughly 45,000 cycles, and there is a micro-USB port on the unit for emergency power so a technician can energize it and get in without pulling the frame apart. Note the fire listing is fail secure only, so on a rated opening that is the configuration you keep.
6) Do I need to be Aperio certified to install an ES100 wireless strike?
Not for a single opening. HES sells the ES100 as a 1:1 pre-paired lock and hub kit, which anyone can buy and install, and every kit model here (the LH, LMH, SH and SMH variants) is that pre-paired arrangement. Pre-paired kits support a limited feature set. If you want the 1:Many arrangement, one hub talking to up to 8 locks, or you want all configuration options unlocked, those are field-configurable components and they require Aperio Certified Integrator training.
7) My door binds against the frame and puts pressure on the latch. Will the ES100 still release?
No, and this is the one that sends the wrong part to site. The ES100 is not preload capable, so a door that pushes against the keeper (a warped slab, a hard weatherstrip, stack pressure in a stairwell) can stop it releasing. Fix the opening first, or specify a preload rated strike instead. Holding force here is 1500 lbs static with 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength, which is about resisting attack, not about releasing under load.
8) Which faceplate do I order for a Sargent 8200 or a Schlage mortise lock?
It depends where the deadlatch sits relative to the latchbolt. Deadlatch below the latchbolt (Accurate, Arrow, Best 45H and 47H, Corbin/Russwin, Falcon 1992 M Series, Sargent 7800, 8200 and 9200, Yale 8800) takes the 1KM. Deadlatch above the latchbolt: 1KD covers Jackson, Sargent 7700 and 8100, Schlage and Yale 8700, while 1K covers Baldwin, Marks and PDQ. Best 34H through 37H are deadlatch above. In wood frames the choices narrow to 1J-2 for cylindrical and 1KM-2 for deadlatch-below mortise. Faceplates are interchangeable, so a mis-specified plate is a plate swap, not a new strike.
9) I'm replacing an HES 1500 or 1600 strike. Will the ES100 drop into the same frame prep?
The ES100 pairs the 1500 and 1600 series bodies with Aperio wireless, and it keeps those body depths, 1-3/8 inches for the 1500 and 1-5/8 for the 1600, with the same 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch metal frame faceplate footprint. There is also a field adjustable integrated shim to take up variation in the existing cutout, and lip extension trim adapters (1500-104, 1600-104) if the old opening is oversized. Match the body you're pulling out to the same number and the prep carries over.
10) The ES100 will not work on my aluminum storefront jamb. What electric strike fits there?
The HES ES100 is prepped for hollow metal and wood frames, which leaves out narrow aluminum stile-and-rail storefront. The Adams Rite 7100 Series is built for aluminum jambs with a flat 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch faceplate, and the Adams Rite 7160 is an aluminum-jamb strike on the same 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch faceplate. Both 7100 and 7160 are non fire rated, so on a labeled storefront opening they are out and the specification has to be revisited.
11) I only need a basic strike on a cylindrical lock, not card reader access control. What should I use instead of the HES ES100?
The ES100 pairs the strike with an integrated HID multiCLASS SE card reader and Aperio wireless, which is more device than a plain electric release needs. For a cylindrical lock with a straightforward release, the Von Duprin 4211 32D is a Grade 1 heavy duty electric strike for cylindrical locks with 12/24 VDC field-selectable voltage and a fire rating. The SDC 15 Series handles a 5/8 inch latchbolt with 12/24 VDC operation. Neither reads credentials at the door, so the access decision has to come from a reader or keypad elsewhere on the system.
12) Which electric strike do I use on a rim exit device instead of the HES ES100?
The ES100 is a latchbolt strike for mortise and cylindrical locksets, so a rim panic device is a different part. The Hager 2945 is a fire rated rim exit strike with field selectable fail safe or fail secure operation and a latchbolt monitor. The SDC 30-4 Series is a rim mount strike for a 3/4 inch Pullman latchbolt in stainless steel construction. Match the strike to the exit device latch before ordering.
13) I need a strike that can be set fail safe. Can I use the HES ES100?
The HES ES100 ships fail secure as its standard operation for the electric strike. Its fire listings, UL 10C 3-hour single door and 1-1/2 hour double door, are stated fail secure only. For an opening that has to release on power loss, the Hager 2930 is a fire rated Grade 1 electric strike for cylindrical and mortise locks with field reversible fail safe or fail secure operation on 12/24 VDC dual voltage, and the Hager 2925 offers the same field reversible function with a 5/8 inch latch. On a fire rated door, confirm the fail safe setting is permitted by the door's listing before configuring it.
14) Can I use the HES ES100 where the door is under pressure and the latch is preloaded?
The HES ES100 is not preload capable, so a door pushed against the frame by a closer, stack pressure or a warped leaf can bind the keeper. For a mortise opening, the Securitron MUNL Series Mortise UnLatch is a Grade 1 fire rated strike in the MUNL series, and it works by withdrawing the latch rather than releasing a keeper the latch is loaded against. The Von Duprin 6210 is a heavy duty Grade 1 strike for mortise locks, 24 VDC fail secure and UL 10C fire rated. Fix the source of the preload where you can; the hardware choice is the second move.
15) The HES ES100 handles a 1 inch deadbolt. What else works on a mortise lock with a deadbolt?
The 1600 models of the HES ES100 accept deadbolt faceplates through the 1DB option for metal frames and 1DB-2 for wood, including the 1NTD plate for a normally extended 1 inch deadbolt without a deadlatch. Most wired peers in the same class are latchbolt-only: the SDC 25 Series covers a 1/2 inch latchbolt and the SDC 15 Series a 5/8 inch latchbolt, and the Adams Rite 7240 is specified for cylindrical latchbolt projection. If the deadbolt has to be released electrically, the ES100 1600 with a 1DB faceplate set is the configuration built for it.
16) What credentials does the ES100 card reader accept, and will it work with the badges we already issue?
The integrated reader is HID multiCLASS SE, so it reads both frequencies. High frequency 13.56 MHz: HID iCLASS, iCLASS SE (SIO-enabled), iCLASS Seos, HID MIFARE SE, HID DESFire EV1 SE, MIFARE Classic, DESFire EV1, and NFC mobile. Low frequency 125 kHz: HID Prox, AWID, EM4102 and ioProx. BLE mobile credentials are supported too. Existing cards in any of those formats keep working, and the strike ties into an existing access control system through the Wiegand hub rather than replacing the head end.
17) Can an ES100 wireless strike go on an exterior door?
Only in a limited way. The card reader is tested to IP65 for indoor or exterior inswing applications, and the operating range is -10C to 60C (14F to 140F) at 0 to 90 percent non-condensing humidity. The strike itself is not an outdoor rated product, so a fully weather-exposed outswing opening or a gate is the wrong application. For a true outdoor gate, the Camden CX-ED1959 series is an outdoor rated electric strike.
18) Should I run wire and use a standard electric strike, or go with the wireless ES100?
It comes down to what the wire run costs you. A conventional strike like the Von Duprin 4211 or Hager 2930 needs power brought to the frame and a reader plus controller at the door, which on a retrofit in an occupied building often means conduit, patching and a lift. The ES100 is battery powered with the reader built into the strike, so a single opening goes in without wire and reports back over 2.4 GHz Aperio to a hub. The tradeoff is battery maintenance (two AA lithium cells, roughly 45,000 cycles) and Aperio infrastructure. If the door already has power at the frame, a wired strike is the simpler buy.
19) What's the difference between the monitored and non-monitored ES100 models, and do I need monitoring?
The monitored versions (the M in ES100-15LMH, 16LMH and 16SMH) add latch monitoring and door position monitoring, so the access control system can tell you the door actually latched and stayed shut rather than just that the strike was released. All models include integrated locked state and tamper monitoring. If the opening is a server room, a drug room, a cash office or anywhere you have to prove the door closed, buy monitored. A back-of-house or amenity door usually doesn't need it. Monitoring can also be added later, it's a field upgradeable option, and OPT-1LM is the single lock monitor accessory. Audit trail depth is set by whatever access control system you're running.
20) Does the ES100 have to be ordered left hand or right hand?
No handing. The ES100 electric strike is non-handed, so one part number covers both swings and you can stock a single unit across a building. Handing on the opening is handled by the lockset, not the strike.
21) Can the ES100 be used on a hurricane or windstorm rated opening?
Yes. It meets ANSI/SDI A250.13 for windstorm resistance, is Florida Building Code approved under TAS 201, 202 and 203, and meets ANSI-ASTM E330. That combination is what a coastal jurisdiction asks for on a rated exterior assembly, and few battery-powered access control strikes carry it.
22) What else do I need to buy besides the ES100 strike to finish the install?
The kit models here ship pre-paired with the AH20 Wiegand hub and include the batteries, so a single opening is largely covered. Beyond that: the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit for laying out the frame cut, 157 Torx screws, and a latch guard if the frame needs one. If the hub is a long way from the door, EXT-10-ANT is the omni-directional external antenna. For trim, a 1500-104 or 1600-104 lip extension trim adapter covers an oversized old cutout, and the 1500-106 (4500 adapter) or 1600-106 (1006 adapter) trim enhancer kits cover a swap from those earlier bodies. 23) What's a good wired alternative if I don't want batteries or Aperio infrastructure?
Several Grade 1 fire rated wired strikes cover the same kind of opening. The Von Duprin 6400 is a modular Grade 1 strike for mortise or cylindrical locks with a 3-hour UL 10C fail-secure rating in satin stainless. The Von Duprin 4211 is the cylindrical-lock version, 12/24 VDC field selectable and Grade 1. Hager 2930 is fire rated Grade 1 for cylindrical and mortise with dual 12/24 VDC and field reversible fail safe/secure, which the ES100 does not offer since its fire listing is fail secure only. Securitron MUNL is a Grade 1 fire rated mortise unlatch option. All of them need power run to the frame.
24) My opening is a pair of doors. Does the HES ES100 cover the inactive leaf?
The HES ES100 is a single-opening device; each strike is a latchbolt strike for one leaf, and its double door fire listing is 1-1/2 hour, fail secure only. Where the hardware itself needs to serve a pair, the Rockwood ESK-DBL is a Grade 1 fire rated double door electric strike with a 3/4 inch keeper in the 310-1 Series. Confirm which leaf carries the latch before choosing.
25) Is a low cost electric strike like the RCI 15BS or Trine 001 a substitute for the HES ES100?
They are different classes of hardware. The HES ES100 is Grade 1 with 1,000,000 endurance cycles, 1500 lbs holding force and 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength, plus an integrated reader and wireless. The RCI 15BS is an economy strike for a special offset latch entry with fail-secure operation and is not fire rated. The Trine 001 Series is a fail-secure light commercial strike with a 5-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch faceplate, also not fire rated. On a labeled door or a high-traffic commercial entrance those two do not carry the listings the ES100 does.
26) I want to avoid cutting the frame. Is there an alternative to the HES ES100?
