HES ES100-15L-IPS-630 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the HES ES100 wireless electric strike work with the locksets already on my doors, or do I have to change the hardware?
The ES100 works with most cylindrical and mortise latchbolt locksets, including 1 inch deadbolts, so the existing lockset stays on the door. That is the point of a strike retrofit: the frame gets cut, the door does not, and no power transfer hinge is needed. Faceplate selection is what makes it fit your specific lock. The 1J covers cylindrical locksets up to 3/4 inch throw and center-lined bolts; 1K, 1KD and 1KM cover mortise locks depending on whether the deadlatch sits above or below the latchbolt (1KM for Accurate, Arrow, Best, Corbin/Russwin, Falcon 1992 M, Sargent 7800/8200/9200, Yale 8800; 1KD for Jackson, Sargent 7700/8100, Schlage, Yale 8700).
2) Do I need to run power and wire to the door for the HES ES100 Aperio strike?
No wire to the opening at all. The ES100 runs on two AA lithium ion batteries that ship with it, and talks back over 2.4 GHz Aperio wireless to a hub. Estimated battery life is about 45,000 cycles depending on configuration, and there is a micro-USB port on the unit for emergency power if the batteries die with the door locked. That is the labor saving: no conduit, no power transfer device, no pulling cable through the frame.
3) Can I buy and install the HES ES100 Aperio strike myself, or does it need a certified integrator?
Depends which way you order it. The 1:1 pre-paired lock and hub kit is available to anyone and needs no certification, but it supports a limited feature set. The field-configurable components, including the 1:Many setup where one hub serves up to 8 locks, require Aperio certified integrator training. If you are a property manager doing a handful of doors, the pre-paired kit is the path. If you are standardizing a building on one hub per zone, you need an Aperio certified integrator on the job.
4) Is the HES ES100 electric strike fire rated for a labeled door?
Fire rated, fail secure only. The ES100 carries UL 10C at 3 hours on a single door and 1-1/2 hours on a double door, both in the fail secure configuration. It is also conformant to CAN/ULC-S104, compliant with NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152, and California Fire Marshal listed. If your access control scheme calls for fail safe operation (unlocked on power loss), that configuration is outside the fire rating, which matters on any labeled opening in an egress path.
5) Will an HES ES100 electric strike fit a wood frame, or is it hollow metal only?
Both. Frame applications listed are hollow metal and wood. The difference is the faceplate you order: metal frames take the 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch plates (1J, 1K, 1KD, 1KM for latchbolts, 1N/1ND/1NM/1NTD for deadbolts), while wood frames take the longer 9 x 1-3/8 inch plates supplied in the 1LB-2 option (1J-2, 1KM-2) or the 1DB-2 option (1N-2). Order the wrong family and the prep will not cover.
6) Do I have to buy new credentials for the HES ES100, or will my existing cards work?
Existing cards almost certainly work. The integrated reader is HID multiCLASS SE, reading 13.56 MHz iCLASS, iCLASS SE, Seos, HID MIFARE SE, HID DESFire EV1 SE, MIFARE Classic and DESFire EV1, plus 125 kHz HID Prox, AWID, EM4102 and ioProx. It also takes NFC and BLE mobile credentials. Through a Wiegand hub it feeds your existing access control system, so cardholders and the head end stay as they are.
7) Can I use an HES ES100 on an exterior door?
Only in a protected way. The card reader is tested to IP65 for indoor or exterior inswing applications, and the operating range is -10C to 60C (14 F to 140 F) at up to 90 percent relative humidity non-condensing. But the assembly is not outdoor rated as a whole, so a fully exposed gate or an outswing door taking direct weather is the wrong application. For a true outdoor gate, look at the Camden CX-ED1959 series, which is an outdoor rated electric gate strike.
8) My door binds and puts pressure on the latch. Will an HES ES100 release under that load?
No, and this is the one that sends people back to the supply house. The ES100 is not preload capable, so a door that pushes against the keeper (weatherstripping compression, a strong closer, stack pressure in a stairwell) can prevent release. Fix the door first, or specify a preload rated strike for that opening. The field adjustable integrated shim helps you dial in the gap, but it does not substitute for preload capability.
9) I need an electric strike for an aluminum storefront jamb - will the HES ES100 work there?
The HES ES100 is built for metal and wood door applications, not aluminum jambs. For an aluminum storefront jamb, the Adams Rite 7100 Series with a flat 1-1/4 inch x 4-7/8 inch faceplate and the Adams Rite 7160 with a 1-1/4 inch x 4-7/8 inch faceplate are both made for aluminum jambs. Adams Rite also offers the 7170 for hollow metal and wood jambs with the same 1-1/4 inch x 4-7/8 inch faceplate if the job has a mix of frame types.
10) What is a comparable Grade 1 fire rated electric strike for mortise or cylindrical locks if I do not need wireless card reader capability?
The Von Duprin 6400 32D is a Grade 1 modular electric strike for mortise or cylindrical locks, fail-secure, with a 3-hour UL 10C fire rating in satin stainless steel. It covers the same mortise and cylindrical latchbolt openings the HES ES100 handles, but it is a conventional wired strike rather than an integrated reader. The ES100 is a Grade 1, fire rated, 12/24 VDC strike with a built-in HID multiCLASS SE reader and Aperio wireless, so the choice comes down to whether the opening gets its credential read at the strike or from a separate reader on a wired system.
11) Is there a simpler wired strike that still gives me latch and door monitoring like the HES ES100 monitored models?
Yes. The Camden CX-ED1799L-8 is a fire rated dual monitor Grade 1 electric strike supplied with 8 faceplates, and the Dortronics 3300 Series includes a latch bolt sensing switch and runs on 12/24VDC with a strike plate for ANSI prep at 4-7/8 in x 1-1/4 in. The Hager 2945 is a fire rated rim exit strike with field selectable fail safe or fail secure and a latchbolt monitor. All three report latch status back over wire; the ES100 monitored models (15LM and 16SM) carry that monitoring inside a battery powered wireless unit with an integrated reader.
12) The HES ES100 will not do fail safe - what strike gives me field reversible fail safe or fail secure on a fire rated opening?
The Hager 2930 is a fire rated Grade 1 electric strike for cylindrical and mortise locks with 12/24VDC dual voltage and field reversible fail safe or fail secure operation. The Hager 2925 with a 5/8 inch latch and the Hager 2928 also offer field reversible fail safe or fail secure. The HES ES100 ships fail secure as standard and carries its UL 10C fire ratings in fail secure only, so an opening that has to release on power loss is a job for one of the Hager units.
13) Which electric strikes are not fire rated and should not be swapped in for the HES ES100 on a rated opening?
Several strikes that look similar are not fire rated: the Adams Rite 7100 Series, the Adams Rite 7160, the Adams Rite 7170, the RCI 15BS economy strike for special offset latch entry with fail-secure operation, and the Trine 001 Series light commercial strike with a 5-7/8 in x 1-1/4 in faceplate. The HES ES100 is fire rated, so on an opening with a labeled door those units are not equivalents. Fire rated alternatives in the same size class include the Adams Rite 7240 for cylindrical locksets with 5/8 in latchbolt projection and the SDC 45F Series with 5/8 in latchbolt compatibility and a radius corner faceplate.
14) What strike do I use for a rim exit device or a pair of doors instead of the HES ES100?
The HES ES100 is built around cylindrical and mortise latchbolt locksets, including 1 inch deadbolts on the 1600 models. For a rim exit device, the SDC 30-4 Series is a 3/4 inch pullman latchbolt rim mount electric strike in stainless steel, and the Hager 2945 is a fire rated rim exit strike with field selectable fail safe or fail secure and a latchbolt monitor. 15) My system runs on AC power - can I use the HES ES100?
The HES ES100 runs 12/24 VDC and is battery operated with two AA lithium ion cells and a micro-USB port for emergency power. For an AC supply, the Trine 004 operates on 8-16VAC, is fail secure and fire rated with a 6-1/4 in x 1-3/8 in faceplate and up to 5/8 in throw, and the Trine 2001 operates on 16-24VAC/DC, fail secure and fire rated with a 5-7/8 in x 1-1/4 in faceplate and up to 5/8 in throw.
16) How strong is the HES ES100 strike, and will it hold up on a high traffic entrance?
Grade 1, with 1500 lbs static holding force and 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength, tested to 1,000,000 endurance cycles. The body, faceplate, keeper, case and trim are stainless steel and the unit is tamper resistant with integrated locked-state and tamper monitoring. It is also windstorm rated to ANSI/SDI A250.13 and approved under Florida Building Code TAS 201, 202 and 203, which is what a coastal facility spec asks for.
17) What is the difference between the monitored and non-monitored HES ES100 models?
Monitored versions (15LM, 16SM, carrying the M designation) add latch monitoring and door position monitoring, so the head end knows whether the door actually closed and relatched rather than just that access was granted. The convenience models (15L, 16S) do not report that. Monitoring can also be added in the field later rather than ordered from the factory. 18) I want a wired Grade 1 electric strike instead of a wireless one. What else does ZenSupply carry?
If you can get power to the frame, the wired Grade 1 options are simpler and cheaper to feed. 19) Does the HES ES100 electric strike need to be handed left or right?
Non-handed. One part number covers both hands of door, so there is no LH/RH decision on the order and no wrong-hand return. What you do have to decide is the strike body (1500 or 1600), monitored versus convenience, the faceplate option that matches your lockset, and finish: 630 satin stainless steel or BSP black suede powder.
20) What accessories should I order with an HES ES100 to finish the install?
Plan on the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit if you are cutting frames, and 157 Torx screws for tamper resistance. A latch guard is available where the opening is exposed. 21) I have a pair of doors with no mullion. Will an HES ES100 secure both leaves?
An electric strike works one leaf at a time, mounted in the frame against that leaf's latch, so a pair needs the inactive leaf secured separately (flush bolts or a mullion) with the ES100 on the active leaf. On a labeled pair the UL 10C rating for the ES100 is 1-1/2 hours in double door use, fail secure. 22) What is the difference between the HES ES100 and the Securitron MUNL for a mortise lock opening?
The Securitron MUNL Series is a Grade 1 mortise UnLatch electric strike with a fire rating, so it addresses the same mortise latchbolt openings the HES ES100 covers with its 1LB and 1DB faceplate options. The ES100 is Grade 1 and fire rated as well, with 1500 lbs holding force, 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength, and 1,000,000 endurance cycles, and it carries the reader and Aperio radio in the strike itself on battery power. 23) Can I use a Von Duprin 4211 or 6210 in place of the HES ES100?
Both are Grade 1 heavy duty fire rated strikes, but they split the opening types the ES100 covers in one family. The Von Duprin 4211 32D is for cylindrical locks and is 12/24 VDC field-selectable. The Von Duprin 6210 is for mortise locks, 24 VDC, fail-secure, and UL 10C fire rated. The HES ES100 lists mortise or cylindrical lock compatibility and runs 12/24 VDC, with the 1500 models for latchbolts and the 1600 models for latchbolts and deadbolts.
24) Is there a universal electric strike with multiple faceplates like the HES ES100 faceplate kits, but wired?

25) What is a lighter duty electric strike for an interior office door where the HES ES100 is more than the opening needs?
