HES 5300 ELECTRIC STRIKE BODIES

The 5300 Series Electric Strike is a fire-rated compact, high performance electric strike designed for low profile openings where there is limited space behind the jamb. Its strength is derived from a unique keeper pin locking design, enabling the 5300 to exceed the ratings of the frame, door and locking hardware. This field selectable fail safe/fail secure unit is easy to install and accommodates latchbolts up to 5/8" throw.

HES 5300 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the HES 5300 electric strike fit a jamb with very little depth behind it?
The 5300 strike body is 1-1/16 inches deep, which is why it gets specified on low profile openings where there isn't much room behind the jamb. That depth is the number to check against your frame cavity before you cut. It mounts in metal or wood jambs and works with cylindrical locksets.
2) Can the HES 5300 be set to unlock on a fire alarm or power loss?
Fail safe and fail secure are both field selectable on the 5300, so the installer sets the mode at the jamb rather than ordering two part numbers. Fail safe releases the keeper when power drops, fail secure keeps it locked. It's also fire rated, so on a fire door assembly the fail secure setting is normally the one you want.
3) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand HES 5300 strike?
No handing to specify. The 5300 is non-handed, so one part number covers both swings, which is what makes it easy to standardize across a building's openings.
4) What voltage and current does the HES 5300 electric strike draw?
Dual voltage, 12 or 24 VDC/VAC, selectable at install. Current draw is .24 amps at 12 volts and .12 amps at 24 volts. Important detail for the access control designer: DC is continuous duty, AC is intermittent duty only, so if you're holding the strike energized for long unlock periods you need to run it on DC.
5) Is the HES 5300 strong enough for a high traffic commercial entry?
Rated ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1 with 1,500 lbs static strength, 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength, and 1,000,000 cycles of endurance. It's a commercial-duty unit in stainless steel with a keeper pin locking design, and it's UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use plus UL 294 listed for access control.
6) What electric strike works in an aluminum storefront jamb where the HES 5300 does not fit?
The HES 5300 is a cylindrical-lock strike for metal and wood doors, so an aluminum storefront jamb calls for a narrow-stile body. The Adams Rite 7100 Series and the Adams Rite 7160 are both electric strikes for aluminum jambs with a 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch faceplate; the 7100 carries a flat faceplate. Neither is fire rated, so they suit a non-rated storefront opening. For a hollow metal or wood jamb in the same faceplate size, Adams Rite offers the 7170.
7) Which electric strike should I use for a mortise lock instead of the HES 5300?
The HES 5300 is built for cylindrical locks, so a mortise opening needs a different body. The Von Duprin 6210 is an electric strike for mortise locks, 24 VDC fail-secure, UL 10C fire rated, Grade 1 heavy duty. The Securitron MUNL Mortise UnLatch strike is also a Grade 1 fire-rated mortise unit. If the facility runs a mix of both lock types, the Von Duprin 6400 32D is a Grade 1 modular strike for mortise or cylindrical locks, fail-secure, in satin stainless steel, and the Hager 2930 is a fire-rated Grade 1 strike for cylindrical and mortise locks with 12/24 VDC dual voltage.
8) What are the alternatives to the HES 5300 with latchbolt monitoring built in?
The HES 5300 offers latchbolt monitoring as an ordering choice, with monitored and unmonitored versions of the strike body. Among other brands, the Dortronics 3300 Series is an electric strike with a latch bolt sensing switch at 12/24 VDC and a strike plate for ANSI prep, 4-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch. The Hager 2945 is a fire-rated rim exit strike with field selectable fail safe/fail secure and latchbolt monitor. For two monitored points, the Camden CX-ED1799L-8 is a fire-rated dual monitor Grade 1 strike supplied with eight faceplates.
9) What is a direct alternative to the HES 5300 electric strike for a cylindrical lockset on a fire-rated opening?
The Von Duprin 4211 32D is the closest straight equivalent: it is an electric strike for cylindrical locks, Grade 1, fire rated, heavy duty, and field-selectable at 12/24 VDC. Like the HES 5300, which is a Grade 1 fire-rated strike for cylindrical locks running 12/24 VDC with field-selectable fail safe/fail secure, it covers the same cylindrical latchbolt opening on a rated door. The 4211 is part of the Von Duprin 4200 Series. Confirm the frame prep matches before ordering, since the 5300 uses a compact body 1-1/16 inch deep for low-profile jambs.
10) Does the HES 5300 work with a rim exit device, and what should I use if not?
The HES 5300 is built for cylindrical locks with a 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch latchbolt, so an exit device with a Pullman latch is a different keeper geometry. For rim exit hardware, the SDC 30-4 Series is a 3/4 inch Pullman latchbolt rim mount electric strike in stainless steel construction, and the Hager 2945 is a fire-rated rim exit strike with field selectable fail safe/fail secure and latchbolt monitor. On a pair of doors, the Rockwood double door electric strike with 3/4 keeper is a Grade 1 fire-rated option.
11) I have a 12 VAC power supply. Which strikes will run on it?
The HES 5300 is dual voltage at 12 or 24 VDC/VAC, drawing .24 amps at 12 VDC/VAC and .12 amps at 24 VDC/VAC, but it is DC continuous duty and AC intermittent duty only, so an AC feed cannot hold it energized continuously. The Trine 004 runs 8-16VAC fail secure and is fire rated. The Trine 2001 runs 16-24VAC/DC fail secure with a 5-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch faceplate and up to 5/8 inch throw. If the opening needs a continuously energized fail safe strike, plan on a DC supply.
12) What is the LBM option on the HES 5300 and do I need it?
LBM is the latchbolt monitor, and it's the one choice you make when ordering the 5300 body: with monitoring or without. Take the LBM version if your access control panel or alarm needs to know the door actually latched, which is typical on monitored perimeter and stairwell openings. Without it you get the strike function only.
13) What is the closest alternative to the HES 5300 for a cylindrical lock on a fire door?
The Von Duprin 4211 is the nearest match on paper: a Grade 1, heavy duty, fire rated cylindrical lock strike with 12/24 VDC field-selectable operation, same as the 5300's dual voltage and field selectable setup. The Adams Rite 7240 is another fire rated cylindrical strike and is built around a 5/8 inch latchbolt projection. Where the 5300 separates itself is the 1-1/16 inch body depth for shallow jamb cavities.
14) Does the HES 5300 come with everything needed to install it, or do I have to order the faceplate separately?
A trim enhancer is included with the 5300 body, and wiring is a plug-in connector rather than flying leads, which speeds up the termination at the frame. What you're buying here is the strike body itself, sold in a monitored (LBM) or non-monitored version. If you'd rather have a kit that ships with multiple faceplates for varied frame preps, the Camden CX-ED1689L-4 is a fire rated low profile unit supplied with 4 faceplates.
15) Can I use the HES 5300 on an exterior door or a gate?
It's UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use, so an exterior swing door in a metal or wood frame is within scope. A gate is a different animal, and for that the Camden CX-ED1959 Series is the outdoor rated gate strike, though it is not fire rated.
16) Can I use the HES 5300 on a pair of doors with no mullion?
No. The 5300 is a jamb-mounted strike for a cylindrical latchbolt, so it needs a frame or mullion to mount into. For a double door opening, the Rockwood double door electric strike with a 3/4 inch keeper is Grade 1 and fire rated.
17) Is there a simpler electric strike than the HES 5300 for a basic non-rated interior door?
Yes. The HES 5300 carries a fire rating and field-selectable fail safe/fail secure operation, which a plain non-rated interior opening may not need. The RCI 15BS is an economy electric strike for special offset latch entry with fail-secure operation, not fire rated. The Trine 001 Series is a fail-secure light commercial strike with a 5-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch faceplate, also not fire rated. The SDC 25 Series is a value strike for 1/2 inch latchbolt compatibility, and the SDC 15 Series is a value strike for a 5/8 inch latchbolt running 12/24 VDC. Note that fail-secure-only units cannot be switched to fail safe in the field the way the 5300 can.
18) Which electric strike covers multiple frame preps when I do not know what faceplate the existing jamb needs?
The HES 5300 is a compact body sized for low-profile jambs with limited space behind the frame, and it ships with a trim enhancer. When the prep is unknown, a multi-faceplate kit gives more room to adapt: the Camden CX-ED1689L-4 is a fire-rated low profile universal strike supplied with four faceplates, and the CX-ED1799L-8 comes with eight. The Camden CX-ED1410 and CX-ED1420 Series are universal Grade 1 ANSI fire-rated strikes. The Locknetics NC450 is a no-cut electric strike, which is the option to look at when cutting the existing frame is off the table.
19) What other Grade 1 heavy duty electric strikes compare to the HES 5300 for a high-traffic entrance?
The HES 5300 is Grade 1 with 1500 lbs static strength and an endurance rating of 1,000,000 cycles, in stainless steel. Comparable heavy duty units include the Alarm Controls AES-100, a Grade 1 heavy duty electric strike; the Locknetics MDS100 US32D and MS100 US32D, both heavy duty; and the Von Duprin 4211 32D, Grade 1 heavy duty and fire rated. The Von Duprin 6400 32D is Grade 1 heavy duty in satin stainless steel with a 3-hour UL 10C fire rating in fail-secure configuration.
20) How does the Adams Rite 7240 differ from the HES 5300 for a cylindrical lockset?
Both cover a cylindrical opening on a rated door. The Adams Rite 7240 is a fire-rated electric strike for cylindrical locksets with 5/8 inch latchbolt projection. The HES 5300 accommodates a 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch latchbolt, with 5/8 inch requiring a 1/8 inch door gap, and adds dual voltage at 12 or 24 VDC/VAC with field selectable fail safe/fail secure, non-handed. The SDC 45F Series is a third fire-rated option for a 5/8 inch latchbolt, supplied with a radius corner faceplate for frames prepped that way.
