HES 1500 630 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the HES 1500 electric strike work with my mortise lock, or is it only for cylindrical locksets?
Both. The 1500 Series is built for cylindrical and mortise latchbolt locks, and which faceplate you order is what makes it fit. The 1J handles cylindrical locksets up to 3/4 inch throw and any center-lined bolt. For mortise locks the deadlatch position decides it: 1K for a deadlatch above the latchbolt (Baldwin, Marks, PDQ), 1KD also deadlatch above (Jackson, Sargent 7700 and 8100, Schlage, Yale 8700), and 1KM for a deadlatch below (Accurate, Arrow, Best, Corbin/Russwin, Falcon 1992 M Series, Sargent 7800, 8200 and 9200, Yale 8800). On Best, 45H and 47H are deadlatch below, 34H through 37H deadlatch above. One thing it will not do is a deadbolt, it is a latchbolt strike only.
2) Is the HES 1500 fail safe or fail secure, and can I change it after it is installed?
Field selectable, so one part covers both. You set it at install and you can flip it later without swapping the strike. Fail secure keeps the door locked when power drops and is what you want on a stairwell or exterior opening; fail safe releases on power loss for an egress or fire alarm tie-in. One limit matters: the 3 hour single door UL 10C fire rating applies in fail secure only. If the opening is a rated fire door, the strike has to be set fail secure.
3) Can I use an HES 1500 strike on a labeled fire door?
Yes, with conditions. The 1500 is UL 10C fire rated for 3 hour single doors in fail secure configuration only, and 1-1/2 hour on double doors. It is also CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104), NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 fire door conformant, and California Fire Marshal listed. If you set it fail safe, you give up the fire rating, so on a labeled opening it has to run fail secure and the release has to come from somewhere other than the strike.
4) What voltage does the HES 1500 electric strike need, and how much current does it draw?
Dual voltage 12 or 24 VDC/VAC, no jumper board to order separately. Draw is .24 amps at 12V and .12 amps at 24V. Run it DC for continuous duty; on AC it is intermittent duty only, so anything held released for long periods needs to be on DC. It is also PoE friendly, which is why the 24V leg matters when you are sizing a PoE controller channel.
5) Will an HES 1500 strike work on a door that binds or is under pressure from a closer?
No, and this is the one to check before you order. The 1500 is not preload capable, so if the latchbolt is being pushed against the keeper by a stack pressure, a warped door, or a closer holding the door into the stop, the keeper may not release when energized. On an opening with known preload you want a preload rated strike instead, or you fix the door and frame condition first. On a normally hung door that closes freely, this is not an issue.
6) What is the difference between the 1500, 1500-LM, 1500-LMS, 1500-DLM and 1500-DLMS?
Monitoring, and nothing else. The plain 1500 is the strike body with no monitor contacts. LM adds a single lock monitor that tells the panel the latchbolt is in the keeper. DLM gives two lock monitors, typically for redundancy or for feeding two systems. LMS is a lock monitor plus a strike monitor, which reports the keeper position as well as the bolt. DLMS is dual lock monitors plus the strike monitor, the full picture. If your access control head end wants door secure and door position reporting from the strike itself, go LMS or DLMS. If a separate door contact is already doing that work, the body only version is enough.
7) Is the HES 1500 strong enough for a high traffic commercial entrance?
1500 lbs static strength, 70 ft-lbs dynamic, and 1,000,000 cycles endurance, in stainless steel with a tamper resistant body. It is ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, the top grade for electric strikes, and UL 1034 burglary resistant listed. That is the specification set for a main entrance, a stairwell, or any opening a facility cycles hundreds of times a day.
8) Will the HES 1500 strike hold up on an exterior door, and is it rated for a hurricane zone?
Yes on both counts. UL 1034 listing covers suitability for outdoor use, so it can go on an exterior opening. For windstorm work it is ANSI/SDI 250.13 windstorm resistant, tested to ANSI-ASTM E330, and Florida Building Code approved under TAS 201, 202 and 203, which is the impact and pressure package a Miami-Dade or HVHZ opening gets specified against. Pair it with a finish that suits the exposure, 630 satin stainless or 629 bright stainless being the usual exterior picks.
9) How deep does the frame cutout need to be for an HES 1500 electric strike?
The strike body measures 1-3/4 inches wide by 1-5/8 inches deep, with a 4-7/8 inch faceplate on the metal frame options and a 9 inch faceplate on the wood frame options. Check that depth against the frame throat before you cut, because a shallow or heavily grouted frame is where these installs stall. HES sells the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit for laying out the prep.
10) My latch is not lining up with the keeper. Can the HES 1500 be adjusted, or do I have to reprep the frame?
There is a field adjustable integrated shim built into the strike, which is how you take up the gap between the door and frame without re-cutting anything. Components are field replaceable as well, so a worn spring or a failed solenoid is a part swap rather than a new strike: OPT-1SRK is the spring replacement kit and MOD-1SOL is the solenoid replacement module. If the lip needs to reach further, the 1500-104 lip extension trim adapter is available finish-matched.
11) Do I need to specify handing when ordering an HES 1500 electric strike?
No. The 1500 is non-handed, so the same part goes on a left hand or right hand opening. For a property manager or a stockroom that means one strike covers every door in the building instead of carrying both hands. What you do have to specify is the finish, the monitoring option, and the faceplate for your lock and frame.
12) What do I need to order besides the HES 1500 strike body to complete the installation?
The 1500 as ordered here is the strike body. To finish the opening you also need the faceplate option that matches your lock and frame, 1LB for metal frames or 1LB-2 for wood. Common add-ons are 157 Torx screws for tamper resistance, the 1500-104 lip extension trim adapter, the 1500-106 4500 adapter and trim enhancer kit (both ordered in a matching finish), and OPT-1LM or OPT-1DLM if you are adding lock monitoring to a body you already own. HES also packages the 1500C Complete Pac if you would rather buy it as one box, though the Complete Pacs come in 630 satin stainless only.
13) Is the HES 1500 compatible with an access control panel, and how does it wire in?
It is UL 294 listed for access control system use and carries ElectroLynx connectors, the quick connect harness that lets you plug the strike into a matching door harness instead of splicing at the frame. It is also RoHS compliant and PoE friendly, so it can be driven off a PoE powered controller channel at 24V and .12 amps. Add an LM, LMS, DLM or DLMS version if the panel needs door secure or strike position feedback.
14) What finishes does the HES 1500 electric strike come in, and will it match my existing lever trim?
Seven finishes: 630 satin stainless, 629 bright stainless, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, and BSP black suede. The faceplate, keeper, case and trim are all fully finished, so the strike does not show a raw edge next to the lockset. Note that 613E and BSP are powder coat rather than plated, which is worth knowing if you are matching a plated 613 elsewhere on the opening. Every finish is available across the body only, LM, LMS, DLM and DLMS versions.
