HES 5200 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size latchbolt does the HES 5200 electric strike accept?
The 5200 takes latchbolts from 5/8 inch up to 3/4 inch throw, and the 3/4 inch latch only works with a 1/8 inch door gap. Measure the throw on your existing lock before ordering. If the latch projects further than 3/4 inch, this strike is the wrong body: Trine builds a fire-rated 12VDC field-selectable strike with a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch faceplate that handles up to a 7/8 inch throw.
2) Is the HES 5200 fail safe or fail secure, and can I change it in the field?
Both, and you set it on the job. Fail secure/fail safe is field selectable on the 5200 strike body, so one part covers an entry that has to stay locked on a power loss and an egress opening that has to release. One caution on power: the 5200 is rated DC continuous duty, AC intermittent duty only. If you are running it fail safe, where the solenoid is energized all day to hold the keeper released, wire it on DC. AC on a continuously energized fail safe setup is outside what the unit is rated for.
3) Can the HES 5200 go into an existing 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 ANSI strike prep?
Yes, with the right faceplate. The 501 faceplate is 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches with square corners and a flat face, made for cylindrical locksets in ANSI metal jambs, and the 501A is the same size with radius corners and universal mounting tabs. The in-frame horizontal adjustable design is what makes the retrofit forgiving: after the strike is in the frame, you can shift the opening horizontally to line up with where the latchbolt actually lands, instead of re-cutting the jamb. 4) What is the difference between the 5200C Complete Pac, LBM, and LBSM versions?

5) Will the HES 5200 release if the door is under pressure from a closer or weatherstripping?
The 5200 is not preload capable, so it should not be counted on to release a latch that is being pushed against the keeper. Preload is the side load a door closer, compressed weatherstripping, a warped door or building stack pressure puts on the latchbolt, and on a non-preload strike that load can keep the keeper from swinging when the solenoid fires. Fix the source first: adjust the closer, correct the door alignment, or take the pressure off the latch. The horizontal adjustment on the strike opening helps you center the latchbolt in the keeper, which is a different problem from preload and worth ruling out at the same time.
6) Which electric strike should I use on a fire rated opening instead of the HES 5200?
The HES 5200 is not fire rated, so on a labeled opening go to a strike that is. The Hager 2930 is a fire rated Grade 1 electric strike for cylindrical and mortise locks with 12/24 VDC dual voltage, which is the same dual-voltage wiring the HES 5200 uses.
