The HES 1006 Series electric strike faceplates are useful when cosmetic upkeep is needed where the replacement of the entire electric strike is not necessary or cost prohibitive. HES DB KIT 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Which HES 1006 faceplate do I need for a cylindrical lockset?
For a cylindrical lock, the J faceplate is the one. It covers cylindrical locksets up to a 3/4 inch latchbolt throw plus any lockset with a center-lined bolt, and it measures 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches for a standard ANSI hollow metal frame prep. Going into a wood frame instead, use the J2 at 9 x 1-3/8 inches, which covers the same cylindrical locks up to 3/4 inch throw. If you would rather order it as a kit, the LB Faceplate Kit accommodates all cylindrical and mortise locks with up to a 3/4 inch latchbolt.
2) Is the deadlatch above or below the latchbolt, and does it change which 1006 faceplate I order?
It changes it completely, and it is the single most common ordering mistake on a mortise application. Deadlatch positioned above the latchbolt: K (Baldwin, Marks, PDQ) or KD (Jackson, Sargent 7700 and 8100, Schlage, Yale 8700). Deadlatch below the latchbolt: KM, which covers Accurate, Arrow, Best, Corbin/Russwin, Falcon 1992 M Series, Sargent 7800, 8200 and 9200, and Yale 8800. On Best specifically, the 45H and 47H are deadlatch below and the 34H through 37H are deadlatch above, so the same brand can land on two different plates. Pull the lock face and look before you order.
3) I have a 1 inch deadbolt in the door. Will the HES 1006 strike still release with the deadbolt thrown?
No, and that is by design on the H family of plates. The H, HD, HM, HT and HTD faceplates all cover mortise locks with a 1 inch deadbolt, and the strike will not release while that deadbolt is extended. If you want the deadbolt to function as a night latch and still have the strike release, order the N family instead: N (Accurate, Arrow, Baldwin, Marks, Omnia, PDQ), ND (Sargent 7700 and 8100, Yale 8700), or NM (Best 45H/47H and 34H-37H, Corbin/Russwin, Falcon, Sargent 7800, 8200 and 9200). The 1006 strike body accommodates up to a 1 inch deadbolt either way.
4) Do HES 1006 faceplates come in a version for a wood door frame?
Yes, and they are a different size, so you cannot substitute the metal-frame plate. The wood frame plates run 9 x 1-3/8 inches instead of the standard 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches, which gives the longer plate the wood screws need. The wood-frame options are J2 and J-2 for cylindrical up to 3/4 inch throw, K2 for mortise with the deadlatch above the latchbolt, KM-2 for deadlatch below, N-2 for night-latch deadbolt function, T-2 for a normally extended 1 inch deadbolt with a center-lined deadlatch, A-2 for a normally extended 1 inch deadbolt with no deadlatch, and H-2 for a 1 inch deadbolt with no deadlatch where the strike stays locked with the bolt out. There is also a DB2 Faceplate Kit for wood applications covering mortise and cylindrical locks up to a 1 inch deadbolt.
5) What faceplate works with an Adams Rite hookbolt on an aluminum storefront door?
The R specialty faceplate is the hookbolt plate, rated for a hookbolt up to 1 inch throw, and Adams Rite is named as the compatible lockset. It is a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch plate, so the frame has to be prepped for the standard ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike cutout that the 1006 body requires. That is the catch on a glass front job: the 1006 is an ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike, not a narrow-stile strike, so confirm the frame will take the full cutout before you commit to this plate.
6) Is the HES 1006 fire rated, and does swapping the faceplate affect that?
The 1006 is UL 10C fire rated for 3 hours on a single door and 1-1/2 hours on a double door, fail secure only. That fail secure condition is the part that matters: a fail safe 1006 releases on power loss and is not carrying the fire rating. It is also CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104) fire door conformant, NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 conformant, ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, UL 294 listed, UL 1034 burglary resistant and suitable for outdoor use, ANSI A250.13-2003 windstorm listed, and Florida Building Code approved.
7) Will an RCI electric strike faceplate fit an HES 1006 strike?
No. The RCI B4704-32D faceplate is built for RCI 4 and 7 Series strikes, and the RCI B6-04-32D for the RCI 6 Series, so each one goes back on the strike body it was cut for. The HES 1006 faceplates are the interchangeable plates for the 1006 electric strike and are the ones to order when the 1006 body stays in the frame and only the plate is being replaced. The shared 4-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch outline makes the two look alike in a bin, but the keeper cutouts and the mounting are matched to their own strike series.
8) The frame is wood, not hollow metal - is a 4-7/8 inch faceplate the right one to order?
For a wood frame the longer 9 inch by 1-3/8 inch plates are the ones built for it: J-2 for cylindrical locks up to a 3/4 inch latchbolt, KM-2 for mortise locks with the deadlatch below the latchbolt, N-2 for night-latch deadbolt use, and H-2 for a 1 inch deadbolt with no deadlatch. The 4-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch plates such as J, KM and HM are the metal-frame sizes. The RCI B4704-32D and B6-04-32D faceplates are both the 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch size, so neither covers a wood-frame prep.
9) My HES 1006 faceplate lines up but the latch sits slightly off in the keeper. What do I order to correct it?
Horizontal adjustment on the 1006 is handled with full keeper shims, part 1006-103, which shim the keeper in or out to meet the latch. If the frame cutout from the old strike is bigger than the new plate, the 1006-105 trim enhancer (a black goof plate) covers the gap, and there are trim adapters, 1006-109 and the 1000-104 lip extension trim adapter, for the frame conditions where the plate needs to be built out. A 1000-130 KD filler plate and a 1000-110 replacement strike plate round out the frame-side parts. For cutting a new prep in hollow metal, the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit is the layout tool.
10) Will the latchbolt monitor still work if I change to a different 1006 faceplate?
Not necessarily, and this is worth checking before you order. HES states plainly that the monitor switches may not work with all faceplate options, so if the strike is running LBM latchbolt monitor or LBSM latchbolt strike monitor back to an access control panel, changing the plate can break that signal. On a card access opening where the monitor point is being watched, confirm the specific plate against the monitoring option rather than assuming any of the 27 plates will carry it.
11) What faceplate does an HES 1006 need for a Corbin Russwin Security Bolt or a Weiserbolt?
The E specialty faceplate is the one, and it also covers normally extended 1 inch tubular deadbolts. It is a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch metal frame plate. Two other brand-specific plates sit near it: the HT for the ASSA model 504 mortise lock with two latchbolts and a center deadlatch, and the Z for unit and mono locks from Unican, Sargent and Corbin-Russwin. Those unit lock and ASSA applications will not work off a standard J or K plate.
12) Do I need to know the door handing to order an HES 1006 faceplate?
No. The 1006 electric strike is non-handed, so the strike and its faceplates work on a left or right hand opening without ordering a hand. What you do have to specify is the lock type the plate is meeting (cylindrical or mortise), the deadlatch position, whether a deadbolt is present, whether the frame is metal or wood, and the finish. Those five decisions pick the plate, not the hand of the door.
13) Should I order the DB or LB faceplate kit instead of an individual 1006 plate?
The kits are the choice when you do not want to identify the exact lock face before ordering. The LB Faceplate Kit accommodates all cylindrical and mortise locks with up to a 3/4 inch latchbolt; the DB Faceplate Kit retains and releases cylindrical and mortise locks with up to a 1 inch deadbolt, with DB2 covering the same range for wood frame applications. An individual plate is the right call when you already know the lockset, for instance a KD for a Schlage mortise with the deadlatch above the latchbolt. On a service truck stocking for unknown openings, the kits do more work.
14) Is the HES 1006 rated for an exterior opening, and are the faceplates stainless?
Stainless steel construction throughout, and the 1006 is UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use. It is also ANSI A250.13-2003 windstorm listed and Florida Building Code approved, which is what a coastal or hurricane-zone spec asks for. For a weather-exposed frame the 1000-102 rain guard is the accessory that goes with it. The strike itself is tested past 3,000 lbs static and 350 ft-lbs dynamic, with 1,000,000 cycles of operation.
15) We need a faceplate in a brass or bronze finish to match the rest of the openings - what are the options?
The 1006 faceplates are stocked in 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel, and BLK black, so a brass or bronze opening can be matched without changing the strike. The RCI B4704-32D and B6-04-32D faceplates are both satin stainless steel parts for their own RCI strike series.
16) The lockset has a 1 inch deadbolt - which faceplate handles that instead of a standard latchbolt plate?
A 3/4 inch latchbolt plate such as J or the LB Faceplate Kit will not accommodate a 1 inch deadbolt. For mortise locks with a 1 inch deadbolt, HM and HTD hold the bolt and the strike will not release while the deadbolt is extended; the DB Faceplate Kit retains and releases cylindrical and mortise locks with up to a 1 inch deadbolt, and DB2 does the same in wood applications. For an Adams Rite style hookbolt up to 1 inch throw the R specialty plate is the one. The RCI B4704-32D and B6-04-32D are faceplates for the RCI 4, 7 and 6 Series strikes rather than bolt-specific options for the 1006.
17) What voltage does the HES 1006 electric strike run on?
Dual voltage, 12 or 24 VDC continuous duty, drawing .45 amps at 12VDC and .25 amps at 24VDC. HES specifies the DC be well filtered with ripple under 1 volt RMS, which matters if you are feeding it from an older unfiltered transformer or a rectified AC supply, the strike will buzz and can fail early on dirty power.
