HES 8500 FACEPLATES

The HES 8500 series is a fire rated, compact, high performance electric strike featuring a unique concealed design for use with mortise locksets without a deadbolt. Designed for fast, convenient installation, the HES 8500 installs with little or no modification to the frame. Simply remove the existing strike plate, remove the dust box and install. Its strength is derived from a unique keeper pin locking design, enabling the HES 8500 to exceed Grade-1 ratings. This unique electric strike complies with NFPA 80-07 guidelines for retrofit into fire-rated frames. The HES 8500 accommodates mortise latchbolts up to 3/4" throw.

Faceplate Options

The 8500 faceplate options kits combine two different faceplate pocket styles with three different deadlatch profiles for compatibility with a wide variety of mortise locksets. HES 8500 faceplate option kits are lock specific. There are two faceplates included in each kit: a standard faceplate and a faceplate with a wider pocket to address less-than-ideal sagging door conditions.

HES 851M 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How many faceplates come in an HES 8500 faceplate kit?
Two. Each 8500 faceplate option kit ships with a standard faceplate and a second one with a wider pocket for openings where the door has sagged and the latch is not presenting square. That second plate is the reason these kits are worth having on the truck: a sagging door that won't latch cleanly into the standard pocket usually gets solved by swapping to the wide-pocket plate rather than rehanging the door.
2) Will an HES 8500 faceplate fit a mortise lock with a 3/4 inch latchbolt?
Yes. The 8500 platform accommodates mortise latchbolts up to 3/4 inch throw, and the faceplate pocket is cut for that. Anything projecting past 3/4 inch is outside what the strike is built to capture. The strike body itself is 1-5/16 inch deep, which is what has to clear inside the frame behind the plate.
3) Can I use an HES 8500 faceplate on a deadbolt mortise lock?
No. The 8500 is built for mortise locksets without a deadbolt, using a concealed keeper design, so a mortise lock with a deadbolt is the wrong application no matter which faceplate kit you order. If the opening has a mortise lock with a deadbolt, you need a different strike platform.
4) Will replacing the HES 8500 faceplate void the fire rating on my frame?
The 8500 platform is UL 10C fire rated for 3 hours in fail secure, ULC-S104 and NFPA-252 fire door conformant, and complies with NFPA 80-07 for retrofit into fire rated frames. It's also ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, UL 1034 burglary resistant and UL 294 listed. Keeping the assembly to the specified faceplate kit for your lockset is what keeps you inside those listings.
5) Will an HES 8500 faceplate work on a door with preload from a closer or gasketing?
No. The 8500 is not preload capable, so if the opening puts side pressure on the latch (heavy gasketing, a closer holding the door against the stop, or stack pressure) the strike may not release. Openings with preload need a strike rated for it.
6) Both faceplates are 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 with radius corners. Why can I not use the cheaper one?
Because on a mortise application the faceplate carries the deadlatch profile, not just the frame cutout. The HES 8500 kits pair two pocket styles with three deadlatch profiles so the plate matches the specific mortise lockset - 851M for Sargent 7900, 8200 and 9200, 852K for Corbin Russwin ML2000, 852L for Schlage L9000, 852M for Yale 8700 and 8800, Accurate, Falcon and Kaba Ilco. The RCI B-4704 is identified by strike series - 4 and 7 Series - rather than by lockset, so it is selected on a different basis entirely. Matching outside dimensions does not mean the pocket and deadlatch geometry match.
7) Do I have to worry about handing when ordering an HES 8500 faceplate?
No handing to specify. The 8500 is non-handed, so the same faceplate kit works on a left or right hand opening. What you do have to get right is the lockset match (851M, 852K, 852L or 852M) and the finish.
8) What finishes do HES 851M and 852 faceplates come in?
Six: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 bright stainless steel and 630 satin stainless steel. All four kits (851M, 852K, 852L, 852M) are offered in every one of the six, so a property manager standardizing a building can hold one finish across mixed lockset brands.
9) Can HES 8500 faceplates be used on an exterior door?
Yes. The plates are stainless steel and the 8500 platform is UL 1034 listed as suitable for outdoor use. Worth noting it is not rated for windstorm applications, so it should not be specified into a hurricane-rated opening.
10) Does the HES 8500 faceplate come in a wood frame version, or is it metal only?
Same plates either way. The 8500 is approved for both metal and wood frames, and installs by removing the existing strike plate and dust box with no cutting of the frame face. What you select on is the lockset (851M, 852K, 852L, 852M) and the finish, not the frame material.
11) My Yale mortise lock is older than 2005 - will the HES 852M faceplate work?
Not confirmed for it. The 852M kit is specified for Yale 8700 manufactured after 2005, plus Yale 8800, Accurate, Falcon and Kaba Ilco/Unican mortise locksets. A pre-2005 Yale 8700 falls outside that, so identify the lockset by date before ordering rather than assuming the profile matches.
12) I need a faceplate in a finish other than satin stainless. What are my options?
The HES 8500 faceplate kits are stocked in six finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 bright stainless steel and 630 satin stainless steel, across all four kits - 851M, 852K, 852L and 852M. The RCI B-4704 and B6-04 faceplates are satin stainless steel, so if the door pull and hinges on the opening are brass or bronze and you want the strike face to follow them, the HES kits are the ones that carry those finishes.
13) The door has sagged and the latch no longer lines up with the pocket. Do I need a different strike?
Not necessarily. Each HES 8500 faceplate kit ships with two plates: a standard faceplate and one with a wider pocket specifically for less than ideal sagging door conditions, and the 8500 strike also takes full pocket shims for horizontal adjustment. That is a plate change on the existing Grade 1 strike rather than a new strike body. The RCI B-4704 and B6-04 are single faceplates for their respective strike series, so they address a damaged or refinished plate rather than an alignment condition.
14) We are standardizing electric strikes across a facility. Does buying one faceplate cover all our mortise openings?
No, and that is the point of the four kits. The HES 8500 faceplates are lock specific, so a building running Schlage L9000 on some openings and Sargent 8200 on others needs 852L for the Schlage doors and 851M for the Sargent doors even though every opening uses the same 8500 strike body. The 8500 itself standardizes well - non-handed, dual voltage 12 or 24 VDC, field selectable fail safe or fail secure - so the strike is the constant and the faceplate is what you vary by lockset. RCI takes the opposite split: the B-4704 covers the 4 and 7 Series and the B6-04 the 6 Series, keyed to the strike family rather than the lock.
15) Do I need to change the faceplate to convert an HES 8500 between fail safe and fail secure?
No. Fail safe and fail secure is field selectable on the 8500 body, and it runs dual voltage at 12 or 24 VDC/VAC, drawing .24 amps at 12VDC and .12 amps at 24VDC. The faceplate kit is a mechanical match to your lockset and does not affect that setting. Note the 3 hour UL 10C fire rating applies in fail secure.
16) How much abuse will an HES 8500 strike and faceplate take on a high traffic entry?
Rated at 1,500 lbs static strength, 70 ft-lbs dynamic, and 500,000 cycles of endurance, with a keeper pin locking design HES states exceeds Grade 1. The plates are stainless and tamper resistant. That's a commercial duty assembly, appropriate for a main entry or a corridor door that gets used all day.
