1) Which HES 1600 deadbolt faceplate do I need for my mortise lock - I have Sargent 8200s?
Sargent 7800, 8200 and 9200 series take the 1NM plate, which is cut for a mortise lock with a deadlatch positioned below the latchbolt. The same plate covers Best 45H and 47H and 34H-37H, Corbin/Russwin, and Falcon. The other three in the family: 1N for Accurate, Arrow, Baldwin, Marks, Omnia and PDQ where the deadbolt is night-latch function only; 1ND for Sargent 7700 and 8100 and Yale 8700; 1NTD for a normally extended 1 inch deadbolt with no deadlatch (Arrow, Baldwin, Marks, Omnia, PDQ). You do not order them individually. The 1DB kit ships all four plates plus the bracket, so one order covers the door whichever lock is actually in it.
2) What is the difference between the HES 1DB and 1DB-2 faceplate kits?
Size and lock coverage. The plates in the 1DB kit (1N, 1ND, 1NM, 1NTD) each measure 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches. The 1DB-2 kit carries a single larger plate, the 1N-2, at 9 x 1-3/8 inches, and it covers Accurate, Arrow, Baldwin, Marks, Omnia, PDQ, Schlage and Yale 8700 mortise locks where the deadbolt is used for night-latch function only. Schlage is on the 1N-2 list and not on the 1DB list, so if you are electrifying a Schlage mortise deadbolt the 1DB-2 is the one to order. Both kits come in all seven finishes.
3) Will an HES 1600 faceplate fit my existing 4-7/8 inch strike cutout?
The 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch deadbolt plates match the standard ANSI 4-7/8 inch frame prep, and the 1600 strike itself accepts every brand of cylindrical or mortise lock designed to work with a 4-7/8 inch strike plate. It handles a deadbolt up to 1 inch thanks to the enlarged vertical cavity spacing. The strike goes into metal or wood frames. If you are cutting a frame rather than reusing a prep, the HES-MTK metal template kit is the tool for laying it out.
4) Can I use an RCI electric strike faceplate on an HES 1600, or vice versa?
No, they do not swap. RCI's faceplate for its 4 and 7 Series strikes is the same nominal 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with round corners, and RCI has a separate plate for its 6 Series, but each is machined for that maker's strike body and keeper. The HES 1DB, 1DB-2, 1LB and 1LB-2 kits mount to the HES 1500/1600 strike. Match the plate to the strike brand and series, not to the hole in the frame - a plate that screws down flat can still leave the keeper sitting wrong.
5) Is the HES 1600 electric strike fire rated, and does it matter whether I set it fail safe or fail secure?
It matters a great deal. The UL 10C 3 hour rating on a single door applies to fail secure only. Set the strike fail safe and that listing no longer covers you. On a pair of doors the rating is 1-1/2 hour. It is also CAN4-S104 (ULC-S104) fire door conformant, NFPA-252 and ASTM-E152 conformant, and California Fire Marshal listed, and it holds ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1 plus a UL 294 listing for access control. Since fail safe and fail secure are field selectable on the 1600, the wrong setting is easy to leave in place on a fire-rated opening - set it fail secure and use the door's own hardware for egress.
6) Will an RCI electric strike faceplate fit an HES 1500 or 1600 Series strike body?
No - a faceplate is matched to the strike body it was built for, not to its outside dimensions. The RCI B4704 is a 1-1/4" x 4-7/8" round corner plate for RCI 4 and 7 Series strikes, and the RCI B6-04 is the same 1-1/4" x 4-7/8" round corner size for RCI 6 Series strikes. The HES 1DB, 1DB-2, 1LB and 1LB-2 kits are the plates for the HES 1500/1600 Series platform, where faceplates and accessories are interchangeable within that platform. Identify the strike body in the frame first, then order the plate from that series.
7) I have a 9 inch faceplate cutout in a wood frame for a mortise deadbolt - is a 4-7/8 inch strike plate going to work?
A 4-7/8 inch plate will not cover a 9 inch cutout. The RCI B4704 and RCI B6-04 are both 1-1/4" x 4-7/8" round corner plates, sized for a standard ANSI strike prep. For the longer wood frame prep, the HES 1DB-2 kit supplies the 1N-2 faceplate at 9" x 1-3/8", for mortise locksets where the deadbolt is used for night-latch function only, with compatibility listed for Accurate, Arrow, Baldwin, Marks, Omnia, PDQ, Schlage and Yale 8700. Measure the existing prep top to bottom before choosing between the 4-7/8 inch and 9 inch plate.
8) My mortise lock has a deadbolt that stays thrown, not a night latch - which HES plate handles that?
That is the 1NTD, cut for a mortise lockset with a normally extended 1 inch deadbolt and no deadlatch. It covers Arrow, Baldwin, Marks, Omnia and PDQ. The distinction matters because the other three deadbolt plates (1N, 1ND, 1NM) are all cut for locks where the deadbolt is used for night-latch function only, and putting one of those on a permanently thrown 1 inch bolt gives you a keeper that will not clear. The 1NTD arrives in the 1DB kit alongside the other three, so you are not ordering it separately.
9) My door sits under pressure against the frame - will the HES 1600 strike still release?
Not reliably. The 1500/1600 Series is not preload capable. On an opening where the door leans on the latch - heavy gasketing, a closer holding it hard into the stop, stack pressure in a stairwell, a frame out of square - the keeper can bind and refuse to release when the strike is energized. Correct the opening first, or specify an electric strike that is listed as preload rated. The 1600 does have a field adjustable integrated shim for taking up gap and squaring the keeper to the latch, which solves alignment, not load.
10) The frame lip on my opening is short and the latch does not sit square - what does HES offer to fix it?
Two things handle that. The integrated shim on the 1600 is field adjustable, so you square the keeper to the latch at the door instead of shimming behind the plate with washers. Where the frame lip is too short to cover the gap, order the 1600-104 lip extension trim adapter in a finish to match the plate. Bear in mind the strike is not preload rated, so the shim is for alignment, not for a door that is being pushed against the latch.
11) If an HES 1600 strike fails in a door years from now, do I have to pull the whole strike out?
No. The 1600 is built with field replaceable components, which is the point of the modular design. A tired keeper spring takes the OPT-1SRK spring replacement kit. A dead solenoid takes the MOD-1SOL replacement module. Monitoring can be added after the fact with OPT-1LM for a single lock monitor or OPT-1DLM for dual lock monitors, and monitor configurations are also specified up front as LM, DLM, LMS or DLMS. Faceplates swap out the same way, so a lock change on the door does not mean a new strike in the frame. For a portfolio standardized on the 1600, that means stocking parts rather than whole strikes.
12) What power does an HES 1600 electric strike draw, and can I run it off PoE?
It is PoE friendly and dual voltage, 12 or 24 VDC/VAC, field selectable. Draw is .24 Amps at 12 volts and .12 Amps at 24 volts, so running it at 24 halves the current and lets you push more strikes down a run. One catch that catches integrators out: DC is continuous duty, AC is intermittent duty only. Any fail safe application holds the strike energized continuously, so that has to be a DC supply. It also uses ElectroLynx connectors, and carries a UL 294 access control listing.
13) Can the HES 1600 strike go on an exterior door in a hurricane zone?
Yes on both counts. It is UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use, and it is windstorm rated to ANSI/SDI 250.13 with ANSI-ASTM E330 testing behind it, plus Florida Building Code approval under TAS 201, 202 and 203. That combination is what a coastal spec asks for. The plates and body are stainless steel and RoHS compliant. Worth noting for a gasketed exterior opening: the strike is not preload rated, so the door cannot be resting against the latch when it fires.
14) Our spec calls out an ANSI/BHMA E09391 strike - do the HES 1600 deadbolt faceplates meet it?
The 1N, 1ND, 1NM and 1NTD deadbolt plates each carry ANSI/BHMA numbers E09391, E09392, E09393, E09331, E09332 and E09333, and the 1N-2 in the 1DB-2 kit carries the same set. The strike platform itself is ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1. So a spec written to any of those E093xx numbers is satisfied by the 1DB kit, and you still choose the individual plate by which mortise lock is in the door.
15) Does the HES 1600 strike have a hand, and does it work with cylindrical locks as well as mortise?
Non-handed, so one part number covers a left hand and a right hand opening and you are not stocking two. It works with mortise or cylindrical locks. For a cylindrical latchbolt, the 1LB kit is the faceplate set; for a mortise lock releasing on the deadbolt, the 1DB kit. Metal and wood frames both.
16) The strike plate on the frame is damaged and the body is RCI - which plate do I order, the B4704 or the B6-04?
Both RCI plates are 1-1/4" x 4-7/8" round corner faceplates in satin stainless steel, so the choice is by strike series rather than by size: the B4704 is the plate for RCI 4 and 7 Series strikes, and the B6-04 is the plate for RCI 6 Series. Check the series marking on the strike body or its case before ordering, because the two plates are dimensionally the same and will not tell them apart on sight. If the body turns out to be an HES 1500 or 1600, the replacement plate comes from the HES 1LB kit for latchbolts or the 1DB kit for deadbolts instead.
17) We service both HES and RCI strikes across a portfolio - can we stock one faceplate for all of them?
Faceplates do not cross between the two, so plan on stocking per platform. On the RCI side the plates are ordered by strike series, with the B4704 covering 4 and 7 Series and the B6-04 covering 6 Series, both 1-1/4" x 4-7/8" with round corners. On the HES side, one platform covers a lot of ground: the 1500/1600 Series uses interchangeable faceplates, so the 1LB kit handles cylindrical latchbolt prep with the 1J, 1K, 1KD and 1KM plates and the 1DB kit handles mortise deadbolt night-latch prep with the 1N, 1ND, 1NM and 1NTD plates, all non-handed and ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1. Standardizing means picking the strike platform first; the faceplate stock follows from it.
18) Is the HES 1600 strike tough enough for a high traffic entrance?
Rated to 1,000,000 cycles, with 1500 lbs static strength and 70 ft-lbs dynamic strength, in stainless steel construction and tamper resistant. On a main entrance running a few hundred cycles a day, that endurance number is the one that matters. It carries ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, the top grade for electric strikes, and a UL 1034 burglary-resistant listing.
19) Is there an HES adapter for retrofitting into a 1006 strike prep?
The 1600-106 is the 1006 adapter and trim enhancer kit, ordered with a finish code to match the faceplate you are running. Along with the 1600-104 lip extension trim adapter, it is how the 1600 gets dressed into an existing frame opening rather than requiring a fresh cut. Both are finish-matched to the seven faceplate finishes.
