HES 7000 FACEPLATES

The dual, preload solution for cylindrical latchbolts and rim exit devices. The HES 7000 Series Electric Strike offers two solutions to address preloaded doors. The in-frame adjustable feature allows the installer to easily adjust the electric strike opening to accommodate the horizontal
position of the latchbolt after installation. The preload release function allows the electric strike to operate smoothly throughout the year under varying loads on the door caused by air conditioning pressure, changes in the weather, warped doors or doors with weather stripping that may often bind standard electric strikes. This unit accommodates cylindrical latchbolts up to 5/8" throw and rim exit latchbolts up to 3/4" throw.

HES 791 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) I have a cylindrical lockset, which HES 7000 faceplate fits?
Two plates cover cylindrical locksets, both for latchbolts up to 5/8 inch throw: the 791 at 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches, and the 792 at 7-15/16 x 1-7/16 inches. Pick by the frame cutout you already have. The 791 is the standard ANSI strike size; the 792 is the longer plate that covers a bigger or previously enlarged prep. The rim exit plates (783S, 786S, 789S) will not work with a cylindrical latch.
2) Will the HES 7000 strike work with my Von Duprin or Sargent exit device?
Yes. The 783S, 786S and 789S faceplates are listed as compatible with rim exit devices from American Device, Arrow, Doramatic, Monarch, Precision, Sargent, Von Duprin and Yale, with the 786S and 789S adding Jackson. The limit is the latch, not the brand: the pullman latch has to be 3/4 inch throw or less.
3) Is the HES 7000 electric strike Grade 1, and does the faceplate choice change that?
The faceplate you pick sets the grade. With the 791 or 792 the unit is ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, with static strength of 1,500 lbs and dynamic strength of 70 ft-lbs. With the 783S, 786S or 789S it is Grade 2, at 1,000 lbs static and 50 ft-lbs dynamic. All configurations are UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and UL 294 listed, and rated for 500,000 cycles. If a spec calls for Grade 1, you need the 791 or 792 plate on a cylindrical latch opening.
4) Can an HES 7000 electric strike be used on a fire rated door?
No. The HES 7000 Series is not fire rated, so it does not belong in a fire rated opening. It is also not outdoor rated and not windstorm rated, so keep it on interior or protected commercial openings. For a fire door you need a fail secure strike carrying a fire label, which the 7000 does not have.
5) My electric strike binds when the HVAC pressurizes the building. Will the HES 7000 fix that?
That is the problem the 7000 was built for. It handles preload two ways: the in-frame horizontal adjustment lets the installer shift the strike opening to line up with the latchbolt after the frame is already set, and the preload release function lets the strike operate under load from air pressure, weather swings, warped doors or compressed weatherstripping. One caveat for the spec: preload capability applies in fail secure mode only. Set the field selectable option to fail safe and you give up the preload release.
6) How deep does the frame pocket need to be for an HES 7000 strike?
Strike body depth is 1-11/16 inches, so the jamb has to give you that much clear behind the faceplate. The solenoid is mounted internally, which is why the depth is fixed regardless of which faceplate you order. If the frame will not take the depth, the SMB surface mounting box is the way out on 783S and 789S applications.
7) What faceplate covers a rim exit device in an aluminum jamb, since the 4-7/8 inch cylindrical plates will not?
Use the 786S at 6-1/2 inch by 1-3/4 inch by 1/2 inch, or the 789S at 9 inch by 1-3/4 inch by 1/2 inch, both for rim exit devices with up to a 3/4 inch pullman latch and both carrying ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 2; the 789S includes a keeper pocket adapter and the 786S also suits surface mounted vertical rod devices. For a metal jamb the 783S is the 9 inch by 1-3/4 inch by 11/16 inch plate. The 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch round-corner plates such as the RCI B-4704 and RCI B6-04 are cylindrical-size cutouts and do not cover an exit device prep.
8) What voltage does the HES 7000 electric strike run on and how much current does it draw?
Dual voltage, 12 or 24 VDC/VAC, field selectable, so one unit covers most access control power supplies. Draw is .45 amps at 12 VDC continuous duty and .25 amps at 24 VDC continuous duty. Size your supply off those numbers when you are putting several strikes on one board, and note that on AC you will want the 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier.
9) Do I need to specify handing when ordering an HES 7000 electric strike?
No handing to specify. The 7000 Series is non-handed, so the same unit works on a left or right hand opening. What you do have to specify is the faceplate for your latch and jamb type, and the finish. That makes it simple to stock one part number across a building instead of splitting inventory by hand.
10) Can I just buy a replacement faceplate, or do I have to buy the whole electric strike?
The faceplates are sold on their own, so if you are changing the application (say moving from a cylindrical latch to a rim exit device) or a plate got damaged or the finish no longer matches, you order just the plate in the size and finish you need. HES also offers the 7000C Complete Pac if you want the whole strike in one box. For the 791 and 792, the 7000-110 replacement strike plate covers the plate itself.
11) Is there an alternative to the HES 791 faceplate in the same 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 size?
Same footprint, different maker: RCI lists a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch round corner faceplate in satin stainless for its 4 and 7 Series, and another for its 6 Series. Those are RCI plates for RCI strike bodies, not drop-ins for an HES 7000 body, so match the plate to the strike you actually have in the frame. The useful part is the frame prep: all of them sit in the standard 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 ANSI cutout, so a frame already cut for one will take the other brand's strike.
12) Can I monitor whether the door is actually latched with an HES 7000?
Yes, with the LBM latchbolt monitor option, which reports latchbolt position back to the access control system. It is an optional feature, not standard, so it has to be specified. The strike also uses a plug-in connector rather than flying leads, and HES offers plug-in modules on the same connector: the 2004M ElectroLynx adapter, the 2005M3 SMART Pac III, the 2001M bridge rectifier and the 2006M buzzer.
13) Will the HES 7000 mount in a wood frame or only hollow metal?
Both. The 7000 Series is listed for metal and wood frame applications. The faceplate choice is driven by the latch type and jamb material at the strike: 783S for rim exit in metal jambs, 786S and 789S for aluminum jambs, 791 and 792 for cylindrical latches. Body construction is stainless steel and tamper resistant.
14) Which faceplate should be specified when the frame prep is larger than a 4-7/8 inch cutout but the lock is cylindrical?
The 792 is the larger cylindrical plate at 7-15/16 inch by 1-7/16 inch, for cylindrical locksets up to 5/8 inch throw and rated ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1, where the 791 covers the 4-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch prep with the same lockset range and grade. Both carry ANSI/BHMA numbers E09322 and E09323. Round-corner plates in the 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch size, like the RCI B-4704, only address the smaller prep.
15) What finishes do the HES 7000 faceplates come in?
The 791 and 792 cylindrical plates come in seven: 630 satin stainless, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 629 bright stainless, and BLK black. The 783S, 786S and 789S rim exit plates are catalogued in 630 and 613E. Note the 7000C Complete Pac is 630 only, so if you are matching lever trim in a brass or bronze finish across a floor, order the faceplate separately rather than in the Complete Pac.
