The 5000 series is a compact, high performance electric strike designed for low profile openings where there is limited space behind the jamb. Its strength is derived from a unique keeper pin locking design, enabling the 5000 to exceed the ratings of the frame, door and locking hardware. HES 501 630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Which HES 5000 faceplate do I need for an aluminum frame?
For aluminum frames, HES lists the 501A, 502, and 503 faceplates. The 501A measures 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches with radius corners, the 502 is 7-15/16 x 1-7/16 inches, and the 503 is 6-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches. All three are flat faceplates with universal mounting tabs and are used with cylindrical locksets. The 501 with square corners is the one meant for ANSI metal jambs, not aluminum, and the 504 (10 x 1-3/8 inches) uses four point mounting for wood.
2) I'm putting an HES 5000 strike in a wood jamb - which faceplate?
The 504 is the wood one. It's a 10 x 1-3/8 inch flat faceplate with radius corners and four point mounting, which is what gives you enough purchase in wood. The 5000 series strike itself is approved for both metal and wood frame applications, so the faceplate is the part that decides the substrate.
3) Will an HES 5000 faceplate work with a mortise lock, or only cylindrical?
Cylindrical only. Every 5000 series faceplate option (501, 501A, 502, 503, 504) is specified for cylindrical locksets, with the 501A, 502, and 503 also covering spring latches in aluminum frames. If you have a mortise lock with a deadlatch and auxiliary bolt, the 5000 series faceplate range is not the prep you want.
4) My latch doesn't reach the HES 5000 strike - can I add a lip extension instead of a new faceplate?
Yes. HES offers three press fit stackable lip extensions for the 5000 series: the 5104-1/2 at 1/2 inch, the 5104-1 at 1 inch, and the 5104-1-1/4 at 1-1/4 inch. They stack, so you can build out the reach you need. Worth checking your latchbolt first: the 5000 accommodates a 1/2 to 5/8 inch throw, and 5/8 inch requires a 1/8 inch door gap.
5) How much space behind the jamb do I need for an HES 5000 electric strike?
The 5000 strike body is 1-1/16 inch deep, which is why it goes into low profile openings where a deeper strike will not fit. Pair it with the faceplate that matches your frame: 501 for ANSI metal jambs, 501A/502/503 for aluminum, 504 for wood.
6) Is the HES 5000 electric strike Grade 1 and can it go on an exterior door?
Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.31, plus UL 1034 burglary-resistant listed and suitable for outdoor use, and UL 294 listed. It is not fire rated and not windstorm rated, so for a labeled fire door opening you need a fail secure strike carrying a fire label instead. Static strength is 1,500 lbs, dynamic 70 ft-lbs, endurance 500,000 cycles.
7) Will the HES 5000 strike work if the door is under pressure from a closer or weatherstrip?
No. The 5000 series is not preload capable, so if the latch is being pushed against the keeper by a closer, stack pressure, or a tight gasket, this is the wrong strike and you want a preload rated model. Faceplate choice will not fix a preload condition.
8) The existing jamb cutout is longer than 4-7/8 inches - which faceplate covers it?
Step up within the HES 5000/5200 plates: the 503 measures 6-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch, the 502 measures 7-15/16 inch by 1-7/16 inch, and the 504 measures 10 inch by 1-3/8 inch with four point mounting for wood installations. The RCI B4704-32D and B6-04-32D are both 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch, so neither extends coverage over a longer prep even on the RCI strikes they belong to.
9) Do HES 5000 faceplates come in a finish that matches my existing brass hardware?
Seven finishes run across all five faceplate options: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 bright stainless, 630 satin stainless, and BLK black. So a brass opening can be matched in either bright or satin, and every faceplate size is offered in all seven, which makes standardizing a building's finish straightforward even where the frame types differ door to door.
10) Does the HES 5000 faceplate come handed - do I need to specify left or right?
No handing to specify. The 5000 series is non-handed and field selectable between fail secure and fail safe, so the same part covers either swing and either failure mode. You only pick the faceplate by frame type and the finish.
11) What ANSI/BHMA cutout do the HES 501 and 503 faceplates fit?
All five 5000 series faceplates (501, 501A, 502, 503, 504) carry ANSI/BHMA numbers E09321, E09322, and E09323. If the frame prep on your drawing calls out one of those three, any of the five will suit it and you choose on frame material and size instead.
12) What voltage does the HES 5000 electric strike run on and what current does it draw?
Dual voltage, 12 or 24 VDC/VAC, field selectable. Draw is .24 amps at 12V and .12 amps at 24V. It is DC continuous duty, AC intermittent duty only, so if you are holding the strike energized (fail safe), run it on DC. A plug-in connector handles the wire termination, and HES offers the 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier, the 2004M ElectroLynx adapter, the 2005M3 SMART Pac III, and the 2006M plug-in buzzer as add-ons.
13) Do I need to order a faceplate separately, or is one included with the HES 5000?
HES also sells the 5000C Complete Pac, a one box solution, if you would rather not spec the pieces individually. Note the Complete Pacs are only offered in the 630 satin stainless finish, so if the opening needs brass, bronze, or black you order the strike and the faceplate separately in that finish. A trim enhancer is included with the strike, and the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit is available for cutting the frame prep.
14) I need a satin stainless faceplate for an aluminum frame - what are the options across brands?
For an aluminum frame on an HES 5000/5200 strike, the 501A at 4-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch, the 502 at 7-15/16 inch by 1-7/16 inch and the 503 at 6-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch are all radius corner flat plates with universal mounting tabs, and all are offered in 630 satin stainless. On the RCI side, satin stainless comes as the B4704-32D for 4 and 7 Series strikes and the B6-04-32D for 6 Series strikes, both in the single 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch round corner size. The HES side gives you a choice of plate length to cover an existing jamb cut; the RCI parts are one size each.
15) We standardize on satin stainless across the building but need brass and black at the entries - which faceplate line covers that?
The HES 5000/5200 faceplates run seven finishes on every plate size: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel and BLK black. The RCI B4704-32D and B6-04-32D are both satin stainless steel parts. If a facility mixes finishes across openings, the HES range carries a single plate profile through all seven.
16) Can I get latchbolt monitoring on an HES 5000 strike?
Yes, LBM latchbolt monitor is the optional feature on the 5000 series. It's specified on the strike, not the faceplate, so pick the faceplate by frame type as normal. The solenoid is internally mounted and the unit is tamper resistant, which matters on the access-controlled openings where monitoring usually gets asked for.
