HES 150 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the HES 150 latch guard actually do, and where does it mount?
The HES 150 is a stainless steel latch guard that installs at the edge of the door to cover the lock and the electric strike. It's a protective plate, not a strike or a lock, so it adds no electrical function of its own. Its job is to shield the gap where the latch meets the strike so someone can't get at the latch from the outside of the opening.
2) Do I need the HES 150 or the HES 152 for my jamb?
Different parts for different places on the opening. The 150 mounts at the edge of the door and covers the lock and electric strike. The 152 mounts inside hollow metal, wood and aluminum jambs. If your problem is exposure at the latch line on the door edge, the 150 is the one. If you're working inside the frame, it's the 152.
3) I have a Folger Adam 300 Series strike, will the HES 150 guard work?
The 150 is listed for the Folger Adam 700 and 742 Series, not the 300. For the 300 Series the matched HES accessory is the 310-2-3, available in standard 630 finish with Torx screws included.
4) Is the Cal-Royal 8641-SM surface mount box an alternative to the HES 150 latch guard?
No, they solve different problems. The HES 150 is a stainless steel latch guard installed at the edge of the door to cover the lock and electric strike, and it is a Grade 1 commercial part. The Cal-Royal 8641-SM is a single gang surface mount box for the 8600 Series, which is an enclosure for mounting a device rather than a guard that shields a latch and strike at the door edge. If the opening needs the gap at the strike covered, the 150 is the part that does that; if a device needs a surface box because there is no room to recess it, the 8641-SM is the part for that job.
5) Is the HES 150 latch guard rated for commercial door traffic?
It's a commercial-duty part, Grade 1, in stainless steel. For a property manager standardizing across a building or an MRO buyer speccing for an institutional opening, Grade 1 is the top commercial tier in the ANSI/BHMA scheme and the same tier the HES strikes it covers are sold at.
6) Is the HES 150 latch guard ADA compliant?
No. The 150 is not ADA compliant. It's a cover plate at the door edge with no operating function, so if your opening has to meet ADA requirements the compliance has to come from the lock trim and operator, not from this guard.
7) Does the HES 150 latch guard come with screws, or do I order fasteners separately?
Fasteners aren't included with the 150. HES sells its tamper-resistant hardware separately: the 157 Torx screws, and the 157D Tamper-Resistant Torx R20 insert bit to drive them. On an exterior or otherwise exposed opening, the tamper-resistant screws are worth adding, since a guard held on by standard fasteners can be taken off.
8) What else do I need to order to install an HES electric strike besides the latch guard?
The guard is a finishing part, not an install kit. For cutting the prep, HES offers the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit, which covers the 1006, 1500, 1600, 4500, 5000, 5200, 7000 and 7501 strikes for 4-7/8 inch ANSI jamb preparations only, and the 9000-MTK metal template installation kit. Where the frame can't be cut, the SMB surface mounting box mounts the strike on the surface. On the power side, the 2001-1 converts AC to unfiltered DC at 35V, 2 amp and the 2001M does the same at 35V, 1 amp with an MOV and self-resettable fuse, though neither is recommended for the 1006.
9) Is the HES 150 a wired electronic part I have to connect to power?
No wiring. Even though it's classed as an electronic access control part because it belongs to an electric strike system, the 150 has no leads, no voltage and no connections. It's a mechanical stainless steel guard over the lock and strike at the door edge. Nothing on the access control side changes when you add it.
10) The Dortronics 6510/COV is also a protective cover - can it be used in place of an HES 150?
They cover different hardware. The Dortronics 6510/COV is an anti-tamper alarm cover for 6500 Series pull stations and 5000 Series push buttons, so it goes over a wall-mounted release device. The HES 150 is a latch guard that mounts at the edge of the door to cover the lock and electric strike, and it is listed for use with the 1006, 4500C, 5000, 5200, 7000, 7501, 8500, Folger Adam 700 and Folger Adam 742 Series strikes. A door with an exposed strike gap takes the 150; a pull station or push button that needs guarding against tampering takes the 6510/COV.
11) What is the difference between the HES 150 and the Securitron SAM surface mount and wood bracket accessories?
The Securitron SAM Surface Mount Kit Accessories and the Securitron SWB SAM Wood Bracket Accessories are mounting parts that support installing a SAM device, so they hold hardware in position. The HES 150 is a stainless steel latch guard that installs at the edge of the door to shield the lock and electric strike once they are already mounted. A locksmith retrofitting an opening where the strike area is exposed is looking at the 150; a job that needs a SAM device attached to a surface or to a wood frame is looking at the Securitron mounting accessories.
12) For a tamper-resistant electric strike opening, does the RCI 9500/9501 do the same thing as the HES 150?
No. The RCI 9500/9501 Series is a mortise pin transfer with a tamper-resistant design rated 1.5A at 24VAC, so it carries power through the door edge to a locking device. The HES 150 carries no power at all; it is a stainless steel latch guard that covers the lock and electric strike at the door edge. An opening that needs concealed power routed from frame to door uses the 9500/9501, and an opening that needs the latch and strike physically shielded uses the 150. Some jobs specify both.
13) What finish does the HES 150 latch guard come in?
Satin stainless steel only, 626, and that's the single option, there's no bronze or brass version of the 150. The sub-series designation is 150-630. If you're matching a fleet of openings, satin stainless reads close to the satin chrome trim on most commercial lock hardware.
14) What are my options if I need a protective cover for a push button or pull station instead of a door edge latch?
The HES 150 only covers a lock and electric strike at the door edge, so it's the wrong part for a wall device. For pull stations and push buttons, the Dortronics 6510/COV anti-tamper alarm cover fits the 6500 Series pull stations and 5000 Series push buttons. For surface-mounting a device rather than shielding it, the Cal-Royal 8641-SM single gang surface mount box is a separate option.
15) Can I use the HES 150 latch guard on an aluminum storefront door?
Nothing in the HES 150's data ties it to a door material, only to the strikes it covers, the 1006, 4500C, 5000, 5200, 7000, 7501, 8500 and Folger Adam 700 and 742. Match on the strike, not the door.
