1) Can I use the HES 2005M3 SMART Pac III with an AC power supply?
Not on a 1006. The 2005M3 accepts 12 to 32V AC or DC as an input generally, but when it is feeding an HES 1006 electric strike the input must be DC. On the other supported strikes, either AC or DC input works, since the unit has a built-in bridge rectifier.
2) Which HES electric strikes does the 2005M3 SMART Pac III work with?
The 2005M3 in-line power controller is listed for the HES 1006, 5000, 4500C, 5200, 7000, 7501, 8000, 8300, 8500, 9400, 9500, 9600, 9700 and 9800 strikes, plus the Folger Adam 310, 310-1(X), 310-4, 310-4-X, 310-6-X, 700 and 742. If your strike is not on that list, this is not the controller for it.
3) What does the SMART Pac III actually do to the power going to an electric strike?
It sits in-line between the power source and the strike and drops the initial voltage by 25 percent once the strike has pulled in, which extends solenoid life. It also rectifies AC input to DC through its built-in bridge rectifier, so one part handles both jobs.
4) Should I use the HES 2005M3 or the 2001M / 2001-1 rectifier on my strike?
Different jobs. The 2001-1 (rated 35V, 2 Amp) and the 2001M (35V, 1 Amp, with MOV and self-resettable fuse) simply convert AC to unfiltered DC, and neither is recommended for the 1006 strike. The 2005M3 is a full power controller: it rectifies and also cuts holding voltage by 25 percent, and it is the one specified for the 1006 as long as you feed it DC.
5) Is an Adams Rite 4605 transformer the same thing as an HES 2005M3 SMART Pac III?
No - they do different jobs in the same circuit. The HES 2005M3 SMART Pac III is an in-line power controller that accepts 12 to 32V AC or DC input, has a built-in bridge rectifier, and reduces initial voltage by 25 percent to extend the life of the electric strike. The Adams Rite 4605 is a regular transformer that takes 115 VAC line power down to 12/24 VAC with a 40 volt-amp output. The 4605 is what creates low-voltage power from a line-voltage source; the 2005M3 is what conditions low-voltage power on its way to the strike. A buyer wiring from 115 VAC needs the transformer function; a buyer who already has 12 to 32V at the door and wants rectified, reduced output to the strike needs the controller.
6) Can an RCI 9500/9501 mortise pin transfer be used instead of a SMART Pac III to get power to an electric strike?
No. The RCI 9500/9501 is a mortise pin transfer with a tamper-resistant design rated 1.5A 24VAC - it carries current across the hinge side from frame to door leaf. 8) What else do I need to order with the SMART Pac III to finish an electric strike install?
The 2005M3 ships one per package and handles power conditioning only. Depending on the opening you may also need the HES 152 mounting kit for hollow metal, wood or aluminum jambs, the HES SMB surface mounting box where the jamb cannot be cut, the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit for cutting 1006, 1500, 1600, 4500, 5000, 5200, 7000 and 7501 preps on 4-7/8 inch ANSI jambs, or the 9000-MTK template kit. HES 157 Torx screws and the 157D tamper-resistant R20 bit cover the fastener side.
9) My HES strike needs to land on ElectroLynx connectors. Does the 2005M3 do that?
No. The 2005M3 is a power controller with no connector conversion. The HES 2004M is the adapter between existing HES electric strikes and ElectroLynx connectors. The 2007M is the version supplied with 4 inch wire leads if that is the termination you need.
10) I'm running low voltage from a transformer. Will the SMART Pac III take that directly?
Anything from 12 to 32 volts feeds it, AC or DC, so a typical 12 or 24 volt access control supply works, with the one caveat that a 1006 strike requires DC input. If you still need the supply itself, the Adams Rite 4605 transformer takes 115 VAC to 12/24 VAC with 40 volt-amp output.
