HES HESCUT-MTK – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the HESCUT-MTK template work on a jamb that is not a 4-7/8 inch ANSI prep?
No. The HESCUT-MTK is cut for 4-7/8 inch ANSI jamb preparations only. On a jamb with a different existing prep, or on a frame you are laying out from scratch to another dimension, this template will not give you the right cutout.
2) What else do I need to order to finish an HES electric strike install besides the template?
Depends on the opening. If you cannot cut the jamb at all, the SMB surface mounting box lets you mount the strike on the face instead. The 152 mounts inside hollow metal, wood and aluminum jambs. For fasteners, the 157 is Torx screws and the 157D is the tamper-resistant Torx R20 insert bit. If your supply is AC and the strike wants DC, the 2001-1 converts AC to unfiltered DC rated 35V 2 Amp and the 2001M does the same at 35V 1 Amp with an MOV and self-resettable fuse, though neither is recommended for the 1006.
3) What do I use for surface mounted electric strike installs instead of the HES HESCUT-MTK?
The HESCUT-MTK metal template kit is cut for the 1006, 1500, 1600, 4500, 5000, 5200, 7000 and 7501 electric strikes in 4-7/8 inch ANSI jamb preparations. For the surface mounted 9400, 9500, 9600, 9700 and 9800 strikes, HES supplies the 9000-MTK metal template installation kit, and the HES-SMB surface mounting box is the housing used with surface mounted work. Matching the template to the strike family is what keeps the marked cutout in the right place.
4) Is the Cal-Royal 8641-SM surface mount box an alternative to the HES HESCUT-MTK metal template kit?
No - they do different jobs. The HES HESCUT-MTK is a metal installation template with magnetic backing, used to lay out and mark the jamb cutout for the 1006, 1500, 1600, 4500, 5000, 5200, 7000 and 7501 electric strikes in 4-7/8 inch ANSI jamb preparations. The Cal-Royal 8641-SM is a single gang surface mount box in the 8600 Series, a housing that mounts hardware to the surface rather than a layout tool. If the jamb is being cut for a mortised HES strike, the template is what marks it; a surface mount box does not replace that step.
5) How does the HES metal template stay in place while you cut the jamb?
Magnetic backing. The template holds itself to a steel frame while you scribe or cut, so you are not taping or clamping a paper template that shifts halfway through the layout.
6) I am cutting a frame for a 1006 electric strike, is there anything special about the accessories for that strike?
The HESCUT-MTK covers the 1006 for jamb layout on a 4-7/8 inch ANSI prep. On the power side the 1006 is the exception in the HES accessory line: the 2001-1 and 2001M AC to DC converters are not recommended with it, and the 2005M3 for the 1006 requires the input voltage to be DC.
7) Is there a surface mount alternative if I do not want to cut the jamb for an electric strike?
Yes, and it changes what you buy. The HES SMB surface mounting box puts the strike on the face of the frame rather than in a cutout, which makes the cutting template unnecessary. Other brands take the same approach with their own hardware, for example the Cal-Royal 8641-SM single gang surface mount box for the 8600 Series and the Securitron SAM Surface Mount Kit accessories. Match the box to the device you are actually mounting.
8) Will the Securitron SAM surface mount kit accessories work in place of an HES template kit?
No. Securitron SAM Surface Mount Kit Accessories and the Securitron SWB SAM wood bracket are mounting parts that carry a device on the frame or wall. The HES HESCUT-MTK is a commercial installation accessory used before anything is mounted - a magnetic-backed metal template that marks the jamb cut for HES electric strikes. A locksmith prepping a hollow metal frame needs both categories at different points in the job, and neither one substitutes for the other.
9) I need an electric strike accessory for a Schlage or Corbin exit device opening - does the HES HESCUT-MTK apply?
No. The HESCUT-MTK is a jamb layout template for HES electric strikes and does nothing on the door leaf or inside a lock. For switch work on exit devices and mortise locks, the field installable kits are the ones that apply: Command Access CRSREXKIT-ED is a request to exit kit for Cal Royal 22/98 and Sargent 80 Series, CYREXKIT-ED is a field REX kit for Corbin 5000 and Yale 7000 exit devices, REX-KIT-ML is a request to exit kit for ML1-Series mortise locks, and SCHLBMKIT-ML is a latchbolt monitor switch kit for Schlage L9000 mortise locks. Those add signaling to the door hardware; the HES template only prepares the frame.
10) Does a glass front opening take the HES HESCUT-MTK metal template kit?
The HESCUT-MTK marks 4-7/8 inch ANSI jamb preparations, which is a hollow metal or aluminum frame condition, not a frameless glass door. For glass door work, Securitron Glass Door Accessories are the Grade 2 parts made for that opening. A glass front installer prepping an all-glass entry is not cutting an ANSI strike pocket, so the metal template has no surface to register against.
11) Is the HESCUT-MTK a commercial-duty template or a homeowner tool?
It is a commercial installation accessory, Grade 1, used by installers prepping frames for HES electric strikes. It is a layout tool, not a part that stays in the opening.
12) How do I cover a chewed-up door edge after retrofitting an electric strike?
That is the HES 150 filler plate, stainless steel, installed at the edge of the door to cover the lock and electric strike area. It comes in 626 finish only. The template kit gets your jamb cut clean; the 150 handles the cosmetic side of an existing opening.
