HES 9000-MTK – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Which HES electric strikes does the 9000-MTK template kit install?
The 9000-MTK is the metal template kit for HES surface mounted electric strikes: the 9400, 9500, 9600, 9700 and 9800. If the strike you are mounting is one of those, this is the layout kit that goes with it. For the recessed jamb strikes (1006, 1500, 1600, 4500, 5000, 5200, 7000, 7501) the HESCUT-MTK is the correct kit instead, and it covers 4-7/8 inch ANSI jamb preparations only.
2) What is a metal template kit actually for on an electric strike install?
It is a marking and layout tool, not a part that stays in the opening. The 9000-MTK gives you metal templates with a magnetic backing so they hold themselves on a steel frame or door edge while you scribe and cut the prep for a 9000 Series surface mounted strike. Nothing in the kit is installed permanently, and it does not include the strike, the power supply, or the mounting box.
3) Is the Cal-Royal 8641-SM the same kind of item as the HES 9000-MTK metal template kit?
No. The HES 9000-MTK is an installation accessory used to lay out the jamb preparation for the 9400, 9500, 9600, 9700 and 9800 surface mounted electric strikes, and it stays with the installer once the prep is marked. The Cal-Royal 8641-SM is a single gang surface mount box in the 8600 Series, which is hardware that remains on the opening. If you are marking a prep, the 9000-MTK is the item; if you need a box mounted to the surface of the frame, that is the 8641-SM.
4) Is the HES 9000-MTK the same thing as part 168070?
Yes, 168070 is the alternate part number for the HES 9000-MTK metal template kit. If a spec sheet or a prior order lists 168070, that is this kit.
5) Do I need the HES 9000-MTK if I already ordered a surface mount box?
They do different jobs. The SMB surface mounting box is hardware that stays on the opening and houses the strike; the 9000-MTK is the template you use to lay out and cut the prep. On a frame that will not take a cut-in, the SMB is what solves it. On a frame you are prepping yourself for a 9400 through 9800, the template kit is what you want. Plenty of jobs use one or the other, not both.
6) What else should I order with the 9000-MTK to finish an HES strike install?
Depends on the opening. Tamper-resistant fastening is HES-157 Torx screws with the 157D Torx R20 insert bit to drive them. If the strike runs on AC and needs DC, the 2001-1 converts AC to unfiltered DC at 35 V, 2 Amp, and the 2001M does the same at 35 V, 1 Amp with an MOV and a self-resetting fuse; neither is recommended for the 1006. For an audible operation indicator there is the 2006M, 75db at 11-3/4 inches on 24VDC. For ElectroLynx connector wiring, the 2004M adapts existing HES strikes.
7) Does the magnetic backing on the 9000-MTK hold on aluminum or wood jambs?
Magnets only grab ferrous metal, so the backing holds itself on a hollow metal frame and will not stick to aluminum or wood. On those jambs you clamp or tape the template instead, which works fine, you just lose the hands-free part. If you need a mounting accessory that goes inside hollow metal, wood or aluminum jambs, HES lists the 152 for that.
8) I am replacing a lock and strike on a door edge and the cutout looks rough. Is the template kit what fixes that?
No, a template kit only helps you lay out a clean prep before you cut. To cover an existing lock and electric strike cutout at the edge of the door, HES lists the 150, stainless steel, available in 626 finish only. Use the 150 for the cosmetic cover and the 9000-MTK only if you are prepping fresh for a 9400 through 9800.
9) My opening needs a switch added to the exit device, not a strike prep. Is the 9000-MTK involved?
No. The 9000-MTK is strictly an installation template for HES surface mounted electric strikes. For adding switches in the field, the Command Access REX-KIT-ML is a request to exit kit for ML1-Series mortise locks, the CRSREXKIT-ED is a field installable request to exit kit for Cal Royal 22/98 and Sargent 80 Series devices with an SPDT switch, and the SCHLBMKIT-ML is a field installable latchbolt monitor switch kit for Schlage L9000 mortise locks. Those change how the opening reports; the template only marks the prep.
10) How many templates come in a 9000-MTK kit and is it sold individually?
The 9000-MTK ships as package quantity 1, so one kit per order line. That single kit covers the 9400, 9500, 9600, 9700 and 9800 surface mounted strikes, so a crew standardizing on the 9000 Series does not need a separate kit per model.
11) Is the 9000-MTK rated for commercial door hardware use?
It carries a Grade 1 rating and is classed as commercial door hardware, which is what a facility standardizing on Grade 1 electrified openings will want on the submittal. It is an installation accessory rather than an operating device, so it is not ADA compliant in itself and does not affect the ADA status of the opening.
