Ideal Industries 89-047 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the IDEAL InSITE 59BNCIS compression connector fit my RG-59 coax, and how do I check before ordering?
Match three numbers on your cable. The InSITE 59BNCIS takes a solid center conductor of 23 to 18 AWG (.023 in to .040 in), a dielectric of .142 in to .148 in, and an outer jacket of .230 in to .250 in. If your RG-59 falls in those ranges it seats. Jackets thicker than .250 in or a stranded center conductor are out.
2) Does this BNC connector work on tri-shield and quad-shield RG-59, or only standard shield?
All three. The RTQ design on the InSITE RG-59 BNC covers regular, tri and quad shield cable, which is why the jacket window runs all the way to .250 in. That is the usual reason a BNC gets returned, so it is worth measuring the jacket on the spool you actually have.
3) What compression tool do I need for the IDEAL 59BNCIS BNC connector?
It is a compression connector, so a hand tool is required and is not included. IDEAL calls out the 30-793 OmniSeal PRO XL or the 33-632 Linear X3. For stripping, the 45-605 PrepPRO or the 45-321. Budget for the tool on the first order; after that you are only buying connectors.
4) Is this BNC good enough for HD-SDI and 3G video runs, or just analog CCTV?
The InSITE RG-59 BNC is specified 0 MHz to 3 GHz, with return loss better than 35 dB to 1 GHz, better than 25 dB to 2 GHz and better than 20 dB to 3 GHz. It is tuned for 75 ohm coax, so it covers analog CCTV through HD digital video on RG-59 within that band.
5) Which pack size of IDEAL 89-047 BNC connectors should I order for a camera job versus a stocked truck?
Three pack sizes, same connector: 92-704 in a 4-pack for a single device swap, 89-047 in a 15-pack for a small camera job, and 89-1047 in a 1,000-pack for integrators terminating in volume.
6) Can a RACO 4734 SWIVEL-LOK or Thomas & Betts 306 Tite-Bite connector be used in place of the IDEAL 89-047 BNC compression connector?
No. The IDEAL InSITE 59BNCIS is a coaxial BNC compression connector that terminates RG-59 cable with a .230 in to .250 in outer jacket and a 23-18 AWG solid center conductor, carrying signal from 0 MHz to 3 GHz. The RACO 4734 is a 1 in Type B liquidtight multi-position conduit connector in nylon, and the Thomas & Betts 306 is a straight Tite-Bite 1 in FMC fitting. Those two secure flexible conduit to a box; they do not terminate a coax center conductor and have no RF path. For a camera or video drop you need the BNC compression connector.
7) I need a connector for a 35 kV power conductor on a CCTV job site - will the IDEAL 89-047 work?
No. The IDEAL InSITE BNC compression connector is a 75 ohm coax termination rated for signal use from 0 MHz to 3 GHz on RG-59 with a .142 in to .148 in dielectric. For a medium-voltage power conductor, the 3M SC0001 stem connector is the appropriate part, rated up to 35 kV for 2 and 1 AWG. The two serve entirely separate circuits - keep the BNC on the camera coax and the stem connector on the power side.
8) What is the connector body made of, and how do I tell RG-59 BNCs apart from RG-6 in the pouch?
Nickel plated brass body with a color band that identifies the series, so RG-59 and RG-6 connectors can be sorted by band instead of by eye. Order it by model 59BNCIS when matching what is already installed on a site.
9) Can I use this BNC compression connector as a conduit or wiring fitting?
No. The InSITE 59BNCIS is a coax termination for 75 ohm RG-59 video and signal cable only. For raceway and flex work you need a different family of fitting, like the Thomas and Betts 306 straight Tite-Bite connector for 1 inch FMC or the RACO 4734 SWIVEL-LOK liquidtight connector.
