1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RA483 ring terminal crimp?
The RA483 is sized for 22-18 AWG stranded copper conductors. That is the red insulation range, so the red color coding on the barrel is your quick field check that you have the right terminal for small control or signal wire. Anything heavier than 18 AWG will not seat in the barrel and will not crimp reliably.
2) What stud or screw size does the RA483 ring fit?
It is a No. 5 ring, so it goes over a #5 screw or stud. On a terminal block or lug landing drilled for #6 the ring will still pass over the screw, but on anything larger than that the tongue will not fit. Check the screw size at your landing before you crimp a run of them.
3) What is the difference between a rectangular ring terminal and a standard round ring tongue?
A rectangular tongue like the one on the RA483 is a flat, squared tongue with the stud hole in it instead of a circular pad. The squared shape resists rotation when the screw is torqued and fits narrow terminal strips where a round pad would overlap the adjacent landing. Electrically it behaves the same as a round ring tongue, and like any ring it is a closed tongue, so it cannot be pulled off a loosened screw the way a spade or fork terminal can.
4) Is the RA483 terminal copper or aluminum, and can I use it on aluminum conductors?
The barrel is copper, so use it on copper conductors only. Aluminum wire needs a terminal specifically marked AL or AL9CU with the correct inhibitor compound; crimping aluminum into a copper-only barrel creates a dissimilar metal joint that will corrode and loosen.
5) Do I need a special crimper for Sta-Kon RA483 terminals?
Use a crimp tool with the red 22-18 AWG insulated-terminal nest. Sta-Kon terminals are designed around a controlled-cycle crimp, and a generic plier-style crimper on the wrong die will either under-form the barrel or crush the nylon. Match the die color to the terminal color and pull-test the first one off the reel.
6) Is the nylon insulation on the RA483 better than vinyl for panel work?
Nylon insulation is tougher than vinyl: it resists abrasion and cut-through when wire bundles are pulled through a panel and holds up better to heat during crimping. It also includes a funnel entry that helps guide stray strands into the barrel. For field work in control cabinets and motor control centers that is why nylon-insulated terminals get specified over vinyl.
