2) Can I crimp a Sta-Kon ring terminal with a generic plier-type crimper?
A nylon insulated 18-14 AWG barrel needs an insulated-terminal crimp die matched to the blue color code. A plain plier crimper tends to crush the nylon and leaves an under-compressed barrel, which is the usual cause of a hot connection. Use the blue nest on an insulated-terminal crimper, and for 600 V panel work a ratcheting tool so the cycle completes to a fixed compression.
3) Can I use this terminal on aluminum conductor?
No. The RB713 barrel is copper and is sized for 18-14 AWG copper stranded wire. For aluminum conductor you need a connector specifically listed AL or AL9CU with the appropriate inhibitor compound, not a copper-only insulated terminal.
4) Does the nylon insulation on the RB713 hold up better than vinyl?
Nylon insulated barrels, as on the RB713, resist abrasion and cut-through better than vinyl and tolerate higher temperature, which is why they are specified for panel work where conductors are pulled through tight bundles. The insulation also funnels the stranded conductor into the copper barrel so strands do not fan out during crimping.
