Sta-Kon RG2-12 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RG2-12 ring terminal take?
The RG2-12 is sized for 2 AWG conductor. It's a nylon insulated ring terminal with a copper barrel, so it crimps onto 2 AWG stranded copper. If your feeder is 1/0 or 4 AWG, this is the wrong barrel size - the crimp won't hold and the connection will run hot.
2) What stud size does the Sta-Kon RG2-12 ring tongue fit?
It's a 1/2 inch bolt hole, so it lands on a 1/2 inch stud or bolt at a breaker lug, bus bar, or ground bar. Anything smaller and the ring will float on the stud; anything larger won't pass through.
3) Is the Sta-Kon RG2-12 UL listed and what voltage is it rated for?
It carries UL file E9809 and is rated 600 V. That covers standard commercial branch circuit and feeder work up to 600 volts.
4) Why is the RG2-12 a two bolt hole ring terminal instead of a single hole?
The RG2-12 has two 1/2 inch bolt holes. Two-hole tongues are what you use on bus bars and ground bars where the connection has to resist rotation under vibration or fault current - a single bolt lets the lug spin. Check that your bus bar hole pattern is a two-hole pattern before ordering this one.
5) Can I use the Sta-Kon RG2-12 on aluminum conductor?
No. The barrel is copper, so it's for copper conductor only. Aluminum feeders need an aluminum or AL/CU rated compression lug with the proper inhibitor compound.
6) What does the red insulation on the RG2-12 mean - is it a wire size code?
The red nylon sleeve here is the body color on a 2 AWG terminal, not the small-gauge red/blue/yellow code used on 22-10 AWG terminals. Don't size this one by color; go by the stated 2 AWG barrel.
7) Does the nylon insulation on the RG2-12 replace the need for heat shrink or tape?
The nylon sleeve insulates the crimp barrel itself, which is what keeps the terminated end from shorting against adjacent conductors or an enclosure wall in a panel. It does not insulate the exposed tongue at the bolted connection, so if your application needs the lug pad covered, you still add a boot or shrink over the termination.
